De cd ‘Round Trip’ van het Grieks gezelschap Kompanía borduurt voort op de rebétiko en smyrneïka revival uit de jaren ’70. In de lente van 2013 namen ze in navolging van hun debuut cd ‘Kompanía Live’, hun tweede cd op. Een album waarmee de groep de randen opzoekt van deze Griekse muziek: gedurfd, innovatief en vooral origineel in ‘een rondreis’ door een bijzonder stukje Europa.

Kompanía wordt in Athene opgericht in 2011 en speelt onmiskenbaar Griekse rebétiko en smyrneïka muziek. Destijds ontstaan na de exodus vanuit Izmir (Turkije) naar Griekenland, eind 19de eeuw. Liederen begeleidt op de baglama (snaarinstrument) over de zelfkant. Kompanía voegt daar niet alleen andere instrumenten aan toe, zoals de accordeon, (slide)gitaar en diverse percussie maar bekijkt de stijl ook veel breder. We horen naast Griekse ook Turkse, Joodse (Sefardisch) en zelfs folk elementen terug. Verstopt tussen de noten, geraffineerd als een soort zeefdruk met steeds de Griekse muziek op de voorgrond. Veel nieuw gecomponeerde stukken zijn er te horen op ‘Round Trip’, die worden gezongen door Katerina Tsiridou, Sotiris Papatragiannis en Dimitras Kranidas, waarbij de laatste opvalt door zijn prachtige (Turkse) stem versieringen. De liederen worden gespeeld en gezongen met een opmerkelijke muzikale dictie. Bijzonder is de percussie van gastmuzikant Ulas Aksunger en slide-gitarist Loeks Schrievers die ook verantwoordelijk is voor de studio opname. Dit Grieks gezelschap bewijst met ‘Round Trip‘ dat rebétiko niet alleen springlevend is maar ook volop in ontwikkeling.

The Greek ensemble Kompanía recorded their new album ‘Round Trip’. An excellent follower from their debut ‘Kompanía Live’. A daring, innovative and very original variation on the rebétiko and smyrneïka after the revival of the 70’s. Kompanía shows a musical round trip through a wonderful piece of Europe.

Kompanía started in 2011 in Athene and plays the Greek rebétiko and smyrneïka. Those days derived after the exodus from Izmir (Turkey) to Greece at the end of the 19th century. Music of the poor people accompanied on the baglama. Kompanía adds a few ‘new’ instruments like the accordion, (slide)guitar and several percussion instruments to create a more progressive style. We hear Greek music but also Turkish and Jewish (Sefardic) and even folk elements. All hide in between the tones, like a silk-screen and always with the Greek music in the front. A lot of new composed music we hear on ‘Round Trip’, sung by Katerina Tsiridou, Sotiris Papatragiannis and Dimitras Kranidas, with a striking Kranidas because of his beautiful (Turkish) voice ornamentation. The music is played and sung with a gorgeous musical diction. Apart as well are the guest musicians Ulas Aksunger and slide-guitarist Loeks Schrievers, who is also the recording engineer and producer of the album. This Greek group proves that rébetiko is still alive and full in development.
