KAL is de band van gitarist en zanger Dragan Ristic uit Belgrado. ‘Romology’ is de derde cd die de groep uitbrengt sinds hun oprichting in 2006. Stevig Roma muziek, met een link naar Balkan Brass en de sevdahlinka, de levensliederen uit Bosnië. Het resultaat is een dampende mix, hier en daar aangevuld met scratchen en elektronica.

Al jarenlang zet Dragan Ristic (1972-Valjevo) zich in voor het uitdragen van de Roma cultuur: identiteit en erfgoed. Dat doet hij o.a. door het schrijven van de boeken ‘Romani in Yugoslavia: Development and Opportunities’ (1997) en ‘History of the Romani Theater’ (1999), en het doceren aan de Amala Summer School in zijn geboorteplaats Valjevo. In 2006 start hij om dezelfde reden zijn band KAL. Neemt twee cd’s op waar eind 2013 ‘Romology’ aan wordt toegevoegd. Een strak georganiseerd album met veel opzwepende muziek, pop gelardeerd waar de Roma nooit ver weg is. Opvallend zijn de stevige, pakkende en soms acrobatische ritmen die vlijmscherp worden gespeeld. Hoe opzwepend sommige stukken ook zijn, de onontbeerlijke weemoed blijft voortdurend aanwezig en laat het bloed sneller stromen. Een belangrijke rol is weggelegd voor de accordeon, die we sowieso veel tegenkomen binnen de Servische muziek en op ‘Romology’ meesterlijk wordt gespeeld door Dejan Jovanovic. De meeste melodieën zijn geschreven door Dragan Ristic en zijn pakkend, opzwepend en veelal gezongen in het Servisch; minder sterk zijn de Engelse versies. Enkele liedjes worden gezongen door zangeressen, waarvan Natalie Nowytsky de meest opvallende is. Zij zingt schitterend het Bulgaars aandoende ‘Ljiljano’ waarop ook een prachtige klarinet te horen is. De arrangementen zijn hier en daar aangevuld met DJ scratch partijen (Calling Mano Negro) die, samen met pop invloeden, de muziek geschikt maakt voor een breder publiek. Dat is nou precies wat Ristic voor ogen had en dat is verdraaid goed gelukt!

KAL is the band of guitarist and singer Dragan Ristic from Belgrade. ‘Romology’ is the third release from their start in 2006. Tight Roma music, with a link to Balkan Brass and the sevdahlinka, the music from Bosnia. The result is a steaming mix.

For years Dragan Ristic (1972-Valjevo) is the ambassador of the Serbian Roma culture: identity and heritage. He writes books about it: ‘Romani in Yugoslavia: Development and Opportunities‘ (1997) and ‘History of the Romani Theater’ (1999) and teaches at the Amala Summer School in his birthplace Valjevo. In 2006 he starts for the same reason his band KAL. Recorded two cd’s and at the end 2013 ‘Romology’. A firmly organised album with exciting music, pop oriëntated with Roma characteristics. Striking are the tight catchy and sometimes acrobatic rhythms which are played very comfortable. How exciting some pieces are, you still hear the Roma melancholy in between that makes your heart-beat faster. An important role is for the accordion. An instrument you’ll find in all Serbian music, on ‘Romology’ brilliant played by Dejan Jovanovic. Most of the pieces are written by Dragan Ristic and mostly sung in Serbian: less striking are the English parts. A few songs are sung by lady singers like the great Natalie Nowytsky. She sounds beautiful in the Bulgarian song ‘Ljiljano’ in which we also hear a splendid clarinet theme. The arrangements are sometimes added with DJ scratching (Calling Mano Negro) that, together with the pop influences, makes the music compatible for a wider audience. And that’s exactly the aim of Ristic and done very well!
