‘Crossroads’, de debuut cd van NedSym Lite: een ensemble dat een afsplitsing is van het Nederlands Symfonie Orkest met als doel een breder publiek bereiken met een breder, toegankelijker repertoire. Op hun cd horen we Roma muziek, tango, licht klassiek, jazz, popsongs en eigen composities van o.a. Tim Nobel, de artistiek leider en contrabassist van NedSym Lite.

‘Crossroads’ is een verzameling van bekende, minder bekende en nieuwe stukken. Er is gekozen voor muziek die niet alleen een groot publiek aanspreekt maar die ook uitdagend is om te spelen. Voor een deel is dat zeker gelukt. De arrangementen zijn fris, innovatief en brengen soms een heel andere kant van de compositie naar voren zoals Vernon Duke’s ‘Autumn in New York‘ dat ingenieus is bewerkt tot strijkkwintet. Fraai zijn ook de Oost-Europese stukken zoals ‘Ballade au bord du Danube’, ‘Hora ca la Caval’ en de ‘Hungarian Dance’ van Brahms waar het NedSym Lite ferm wordt bijgestaan door gitarist Don Hofstee en waar het Balkan vuur flink oplaaid. Enkele composities zijn gearrangeerd door jazz pianist Rob van Bavel die ook het prachtig impressionistische ‘Ravel’s Tomb‘ schreef. Contrabassist en arrangeur Tim Nobel schreef drie langzame balladen die, mede door het gebruik van bugel en drums, een nieuwe goed passende kleur toevoegt aan Crossroads’. Net zoals Carel Kraayenhof die met bandoneon aandachtig te vinden is op Piazzolla’s ‘Oblivion’. Qua improvisatie blijft dit debuut wat braaf en zijn ‘Autumn Leaves’ en ‘Bei mir bist du shein’ wel wat erg gemakkelijke keuzes geweest. Maar qua vakmanschap en muzikale mixtuur is ‘Crossroads’ een kruispunt zonder stoplichten waar het muzikaal verkeer alle kanten opvliegt. Heerlijk!

‘Crossroads’ is the debut cd of NedSym Lite: an ensemble that is part of the Nederlands Symfonie Orkest. The aim of the ensemble is to reach more people with a broader repertoire. On their cd you’ll find Roma music, tango, light classical, jazz, pop song and some new composed music by Tim Nobel, the artistic leader and double bass player of NedSym Lite.

‘Crossroads’ is a collection of (well-) known and new compositions. Music for a wider audience but still defiant to play. Some pieces sound extremely well. The arrangements are fresh and innovative and show another part of compositions, like Vernon Duke’s ‘Autumn in New York‘ which been marvelous arranged for string quintet. Great as well are the East-European pieces, like ‘Ballade au bord du Danube’, ‘Hora ca la Caval’ and the ‘Hungarian Dance’ of Brahms where NedSym Lite coörperated with guitarist Don Hofstee and the Balkan fire is really hot. A few compositions are arranged by pianist Rob van Bavel who wrote also the impressionistic piece ‘Ravel’s Tomb‘. Doublebass player and arranger Tim Nobel wrote three slow compositions which fit very well in enitere collection, also by using flugelhorn and drums. Like bandoneon player Carel Kraayenhof who plays attentive Piazolla’s ‘Oblivion’. The improvisations on ‘Crossroads‘ are a little decent and ‘Autumn Leaves’ and ‘Bei mir bist du shein’ were too easy choices. But the musical craft and the musical mixture shows ‘Crossroads’ without traffic lights, with a musical exposure that flies all over the place. Lovely!
