De muziek van het Bretonse trio O’Tridal is doorgaans energiek en opzwepend. Maar daar is dan hun LIVE-album waar de levendigheid nog intenser wordt en werkelijk vanaf spat!

De instrumentale muziek van O’Tridal zit vol melodieuze thema’s die gespeeld worden door Thibault Niobé op elektrische en akoestische gitaar, Yeltaz Guenneau bespeelt de houten dwarsfluit (traverso) of fleût-a-dreuz, zoals het instrument heet in het Bretons, stevig ondersteund door slagwerker/ percussionist Kentin Juillard.

Op dit derde album LIVE spelen ze eigen composities en Bretons, traditioneel repertoire. Lang uitgesponnen thema’s worden met verve gespeeld, waarna er wordt geïmproviseerd, zoals in Tarabbarzh. De arrangementen zitten geraffineerd in elkaar. Gitaar en fluit wisselen moeiteloos van thema-spel, naar begeleiding, naar improvisatie, aangevuld met accenten en ritmische verschuivingen. Alhoewel er ‘maar’ drie instrumenten worden gebruikt, klinkt dit trio als een volledige band. Zelfs de bas-sound mis je niet omdat deze zo nu en dan wordt opgevangen door de gitaar. Drummer/ percussionist zet een breed ritme neer, dat hij aanvult met taboulin (handtrommel) en shakers.

De muziek beweegt op het snijvlak van pop, rock, jazz, blues en funk en natuurlijk Bretonse folk. Ze mixen deze stijlen op een organische wijze, soms per nummer of passage. Avontuurlijk en gedurfd. Niobé, Guenneau en Juillard zijn fantastische muzikanten die niet alleen de Bretonse folk een enorme, vernieuwende boost geven, maar dat ook nog inventief, virtuoos en met veel lol & spelplezier doen.

The music of the Breton trio O’Tridal is usually energetic and rousing. But now there is their LIVE album where the liveliness becomes even more intense and really bursts out!

The instrumental music of O’Tridal is full of melodic themes played by Thibault Niobé on electric and acoustic guitar and Yeltaz Guenneau plays the wooden transverse flute (traverso) or fleût-a-dreuz as the instrument is called in Breton, firmly supported by drummer/ percussionist Kentin Juillard.

On this third album LIVE they play their own compositions and Breton, traditional repertoire. Long melodic lines are played with verve, after which improvisation follows, such as in Tarabbarzh. The arrangements are sophisticatedly constructed. Guitar and flute effortlessly switch from theme playing, to accompaniment, to improvisation supplemented with accents and rhythmic shifts. Although ‘only’ three instruments are used, this trio sounds like a full, complete (massive) band. Even the bass sound is not missed because it is occasionally picked up by the guitar. The drummer/percussionist creates a broad rhythm, which he supplements with taboulin (hand drum) and shakers.

The music moves on the cutting edge of pop, rock, jazz, blues and funk and of course Breton folk. They mix these styles in an organic way, sometimes per song or passage. Adventurous and daring. Niobé, Guenneau and Juillard are fantastic musicians who not only give Breton folk an enormous, innovative boost, but also do so inventively, virtuously and with a lot of fun & enjoyment, which makes it lovely to listen to.
