Nani (Noam Vazana) schrijft muzikale geschiedenis met haar nieuwe album Ke Haber.

Noam Vazana is een muzikaal talent dat in staat muziek te schrijven die de kern van de Ladino-traditie in zich draagt. De liederen van de verdreven Joden uit Spanje. Gedwongen verlieten zij Spanje eind 15de eeuw en namen hun liederen mee. Haar oma zong deze liederen en Noam groeide ermee op.

Ze vestigde zich 15 jaar geleden in Amsterdam en groeide uit tot het (nationale) boegbeeld van deze waardevolle traditie. Ze zingt, speelt piano, trombone en schreef de meeste stukken op haar nieuwe album Ke Haber. Ze wordt bijgestaan door (bas)gitarist en charango-speler Jorge Bravo, percussionist Ayoze De Alejandro en cellist Bence Huszar.

Noam zingt veelal over de liefde: de liefde voor een jong meisje dat moet oppassen voor kwade invloeden, de moederliefde of een liefdevolle vriendschap. De composities zijn fraai gearrangeerd. Vooral het gebruik van piano en cello in No Tiene Hija…. is werkelijk schitterend. Na een gitaar-couplet (met flamenco-kleuren) en rasp vult de piano aan met hoog gespeelde octaven, gevolgd door een cello-thema. En dan de gezongen melodie, deze tilt je even uit je stoel. Prachtig helder gezongen word je meegevoerd in de relatie tussen moeder-en-dochter. In Fada De Mi Korazon horen we ook een mooie combinatie van piano en (flamenco)gitaar. En ook hier is de melodie wonderschoon en gaat deze net even anders dan je verwacht. In het daaropvolgende El Gacela horen we duidelijk de sefardische invloed, zowel qua melodie als ook in het gebruik van de akkoorden die verwijzen naar deze eeuwenoude traditie. Ook bijzonder is Landarico. Hier klinkt een homofone begeleiding op meerdere trombones waar Noam overheen zingt over de koningin en de koning.

Alle liedjes hebben pakkende melodieën die zo vertrouwd klinken dat het lijkt alsof je ze al eens eerder hoorde. Bovendien zit er in elk lied wel een melodieus of harmonisch vernuft waardoor de muziek een meerwaarde krijgt. En dat is precies wat dit album zo de moeite waard maakt. Niet iedere luisteraar zal het opvallen en dat is ook helemaal niet erg: deze toehoorder zal het gewoon bijzondere muziek vinden en dat is het ook!

Nani (Noam Vazana) writes musical history with her new album Ke Haber.

Noam Vazana is a musical talent who is able to write music that carries the core of the Ladino tradition. The songs of the expelled Jews from Spain. They were forced to leave Spain at the end of the 15th century and took their songs with them. Her grandmother sang these songs and Noam grew up with them.

15 years ago she settled in Amsterdam and grew to become the (national) figurehead of this valuable tradition. She sings, plays the piano, trombone and wrote most of the pieces on her new album Ke Haber. She is assisted by (bass) guitarist and charango player Jorge Bravo, percussionist Ayoze De Alejandro and cellist Bence Huszar.

Noam often sings about love: the love for a young girl who has to beware of evil influences, motherly love or a loving friendship. The compositions are beautifully arranged. Especially the use of piano and cello in No Tiene Hija…. is truly magnificent. After a guitar verse (with flamenco colours) and rasp, the piano fills in with high octaves followed by a cello theme. And then the sung melody, which lifts you out of your chair for a moment. Beautifully sung, you are carried away in the relationship between mother and daughter. In Fada De Mi Korazon we also hear a beautiful combination of piano and (flamenco) guitar. And here too the melody is wonderful, it goes just a little differently than you expect. In the following El Gacela we clearly hear the sephardic influence, both in terms of melody and in the use of chords that refer to this age-old tradition. Landarico is also special. Here a homophonic accompaniment sounds on multiple trombones over which Noam sings about the queen and the king.

All songs have catchy melodies that sound so familiar that it seems as if you have heard them before. Moreover, there is a melodic or harmonic ingenuity in every song that gives the music added value. And that is exactly what makes this album so worthwhile. Not every listener will notice it and that is not a bad thing: this listener will simply find it special music and that is what it is, indeed!
