Detached Views is het debuut-album van de Duitse/Italiaanse vibrafonist en componist Marco Ullstein die met zijn kwintet een enerverende CD aflevert.

We kennen natuurlijk allemaal vibrafonist Lionel Hampton die opviel met zijn strakke frasering en timing. Hij speelde met twee stokken (en met twee vingers, virtuoos piano). En Milt Jackson of de jazzvariaties van Bobby Hutcherson, die later ook wereldmuziek-invloeden toevoegde aan zijn muziek. Of Gary Burton (speelt met 4 stokken) die fantastische opnames maakte met o.a. pianist Chick Corea, waaronder de ECM-box Crystel Silence.

Vibrafonist Marco Ullstein bracht eind 2024 zijn debuut-album Detached Views uit. Een album waar hij verschillende (jazz)stijlen onderbrengt, ze met elkaar mixt & matched. Waar be-bop moeiteloos wordt ingewisseld voor jazz-rock om vervolgens over te gaan in pop, zoals we dat horen in The Present Past. Het thema is een sterk punt in de composities van Ullstein. Thema’s waar omheen het arrangement is opgebouwd in sterke structuren met ferme accenten, ingebed in fraaie harmonieën, zoals te horen in de prachtige vibrafoon-arpeggio’s in Enchantment (en ook in Fragments of Home), waar het thema in lange noten over de arpeggio’s heen lijkt te zweven. Prachtig is ook Raindrops. Een ballade in 6/8ste maat waar je tussen de noten de regendruppels hoort vallen. Solo’s op vibrafoon, tenorsax en gitaar bewegen soepel en lenig over de harmonieën, met hier en daar een spannend modaal uitstapje dat naar meer smaakt.

De composities zijn ritmisch van aard, gelardeerd met ferme accenten. Helaas zorgt het overdadig (crash)bekkengebruik dat deze transparante speelsheid enigszins teniet wordt gedaan. Ullstein wordt bijgestaan door tenor saxofonist Pietro Mirabassi, gitarist Emiliano Roca, drummer Francesco Parsi en contrabassist Arjun Ramdas die er samen voor zorgen dat Detached Views inderdaad een excellente en ruime muzikale horizon biedt.

Detached Views is the debut album of German/Italian vibraphonist and composer Marco Ullstein, who delivers an exciting CD with his quintet.

We all know vibraphonist Lionel Hampton who stood out with his tight phrasing and timing. He played with two sticks (and with two fingers, virtuoso piano). And Milt Jackson or the jazz variations of Bobby Hutcherson, who later also added world music influences to his music. Or Gary Burton (plays with 4 sticks) who made fantastic recordings with pianist Chick Corea, including the ECM box Crystel Silence.

Vibraphonist Marco Ullstein released his debut album Detached Views at the end of 2024. An album in which he accommodates different (jazz) styles, mixes & matches them with each other. Where be-bop is effortlessly exchanged for jazz-rock and then turns into pop, as we hear in The Present Past. The theme is a strong point in Ullstein’s compositions. Themes around which the arrangement is built in strong structures with firm accents, embedded in beautiful harmonies, as can be heard in the wonderful vibraphone arpeggios in Enchantment (and also in Fragments of Home), where the melody seems to float over the arpeggios in long notes. Raindrops is also great piece. A ballad in 6/8 time where you can hear the raindrops falling between the notes. Solos on vibraphone, tenor sax and guitar move beautifully over the harmonies, with here and there a modal touch that makes you want more.

The compositions are rhythmic, larded with firm accents. Unfortunately, the excessive use of (crash) cymbals ensures that this transparent playfulness is somewhat undone. Ullstein is joined by tenor saxophonist Pietro Mirabassi, guitarist Emiliano Roca, drummer Francesco Parsi and double bassist Arjun Ramdas, who together ensure that Detached Views indeed offers an excellent and broad musical horizon.
