The Road to You is een knap stukje (folk)muziek waarin de Franse gitarist Matthias Duplessy op ingenieuze wijze diverse strijkinstrumenten verwerkt in zijn muziek.

Matthias Duplessy is een autodidactisch musicus. Zijn muzikale werk- en componeer-veld heeft zich door de jaren heen verbreed van klassieke muziek, folk, pop, Oriëntaals, India’s naar Russisch en Zuid-Europese muziek. Hij bespeelt tientallen instrumenten waaronder allerlei soorten gitaren, accordeons, fluiten en percussie.

Op dit vierde album The Road to You horen we Duplessy in samenwerking met 5 musici, die strijkinstrumenten bespelen uit diverse landen, respectievelijk: de Arabische viool van Zied Zouari, de Chinese erhu van Guo Gan, de Zweedse druktoetsenviool nyckelharpa van Aliocha Regnard, de sarangi van de Indiase Sabir Khan en de morin khuur van de Mongoolse musicus Mandaakahi Daansuren, aangevuld met pianist Rehann Duplessy. Elk strijkinstrument heeft zijn eigen, specifieke klankkleur. Zo heeft de 3 snarige sarangi de typische Indiase klankkleur en zijn er resonantie-snaren die meeklinken en de klank breder en voller maakt, terwijl de Zweedse nyckelharpa 16 snaren heeft (ook resonantie-snaren) en bovendien wordt het instrument bespeelt door middel van druktoetsen. De morin khuur en de Chinese erhu hebben beiden 2 snaren.

Duplessy bespeelt, op piano, strijkinstrumenten en contrabas (Damian Nueva) na, alle instrumenten en componeerde alle stukken op Let’s Meet, Almaz en Cloudy Night na. Zijn muziek draait om melodie, pakkende thema’s die goed in het gehoor liggen. Verrassend zijn de combinaties van strijkinstrumenten die je normaal gesproken niet zo vaak tegenkomt op één CD en zeker niet in één nummer. Duplessy heeft een goede kijk op sfeer en weet deze voortreffelijk te vangen in zijn ingenieuze arrangementen. Bijvoorbeeld in Alaska, waar hij de erhu moeiteloos integreert in de flamenco-georiënteerde sfeer, aangevuld met handgeklap, voetgestamp en flamenco-gitaarspel. In de compositie Lune zijn het zelfs de viool, de erhu en de morin khuur die elkaar aanvullen en versmelten in een oorstrelende melodie, terwijl de sarangi en viool de boventoon voeren in Let’s Meet. In Tao’s Waltz gaan we de steppe op van Mongolië met vocale ondersteuning (en boven-toonzang in Almaz). Een hele andere kant gaan we dan op in With My Son, waar we vader en zoon (op piano) horen, gevolgd door het klassieke stuk Je M’en Souviens.

Matthias Duplessy noemt zijn band Duplessy & The Violins of the World. Inderdaad, The Road to You is een snarenreis om de wereld in bijna 48 minuten: gedurfd, toegankelijk en welbespraakt.

The Road to You is a beautiful piece of (folk) music in which the French guitarist Matthias Duplessy ingeniously incorporates various string instruments into his music.

Matthias Duplessy is a self-taught musician. His musical field of work and composition has expanded over the years from classical music, folk, pop, oriental, Indian to Russian and southern European music. He plays dozens of instruments including all kinds of guitars, accordions, flutes and percussion.

On this fourth album The Road to You we hear Duplessy in a collaboration with 5 musicians, who play string instruments from various countries, respectively: the Arabic violin of Zied Zouari, the Chinese erhu of Guo Gan, the Swedish push-button violin nyckelharpa of Aliocha Regnard, the sarangi of the Indian Sabir Khan and the morin khuur of the Mongolian musician Mandaakahi Daansuren, supplemented by pianist Rehann Duplessy. Each string instrument has its own specific timbre. For example, the 3-string sarangi has the typical Indian timbre and there are resonance strings that resonate and make the sound broader and fuller, while the Swedish nyckelharpa has 16 strings (also resonance strings) and the instrument is played by means of keys. The morin khuur and the Chinese erhu both have 2 strings.

Duplessy plays all instruments, except for the piano, string instruments and double bass (Damian Nueva), and composed all the pieces except for Let’s Meet, Almaz and Cloudy Night. His music revolves around melody, catchy themes that are easy on the ear. Surprising are the combinations of string instruments that you normally don’t come across that often on one CD and certainly not in one song. Duplessy has a good ear for atmosphere and knows how to capture this excellently in his ingenious arrangements. For example in Alaska, where he effortlessly integrates the erhu into the flamenco-oriented atmosphere, complemented by hand clapping, foot stamping and flamenco guitar playing. In the composition Lune it is even the violin, the erhu and the morin khuur that complement each other and merge into an ear-pleasing melody, while the sarangi and violin predominate in Let’s Meet. In Tao’s Waltz we go to the steppe of Mongolia with vocal support (and over-tone singing in Almaz). And there’s a completely different touch in With My Son, in which father and son (on piano) play together, followed by the classical piece Je M’en Souviens.

Matthias Duplessy calls his band Duplessy & The Violins of the World. Indeed, The Road to You is a string journey around the world in almost 48 minutes: daring, accessible and eloquent.
