MUSIC is het meest persoonlijke album van de Groningse jazzpianist Boelo Klat, waarop hij het achterste van zijn tong laat horen.

Boelo Klat is een gevoelige pianist en componist die de muziek bij zijn muzikale horens vat. Voor zijn nieuwe album MUSIC componeerde hij nieuw werk en re-arangeerde hij oude stukken. ‘Verlies’ is daarbij een belangrijk thema. Zo componeerde hij het prachtige Reverie for Olivier (voor zijn overleden stiefzoon) en is Music for Hugo (voor zijn zoon die de muziek na een computercrash vaarwel zegt), waarin we de invloed van Keith Jarrett horen. Mevrouwtje is een ode aan zijn vorige hond en Light of Paris is geschreven ter nagedachtenis aan de slachtoffers van de aanslagen in Parijs, 2015. Daarnaast is Hymne een werk voor zijn overleden schoonvader.

In al deze stukken horen we Klat’s ingetogen spel, nadenkend, mijmerend en vertellend in uitgesproken thema’s, aangevuld met fraaie improvisaties waarin hij prachtige variaties speelt, waardoor de muziek iets meer lucht krijgt.

Toch staan er na al dit enigszins meditatieve werk, ook wat lichtere stukken op MUSIC, zoals Skippy. Door de stride-pianostijl en de hoekige akkoorden klinkt hier een duidelijke link naar Thelonious Monk, maar ook naar George Shearing. De blinde meesterpianist die zo bekend werd door zijn stuwende linkerhand met de pompende-op-de-tel akkoorden.

De laatste twee stukken Daydream en Rothko zijn liederen zonder woorden waar de melodie, het thema, soms verscholen ligt in de harmonieën, gevolgd door subtiele solo’s met hier en daar een ‘stiekeme’ blue-note. Hierin keert Boelo Klat terug naar zijn intentie en daarmee naar de essentie van zijn album MUSIC waarop hij zich ontpopt tot een muzikaal verhalenverteller die op meesterlijke wijze zijn innerlijke kracht op de muzikale lijn heeft gezet!

MUSIC is the most personal album by Groningen (North of the Netherlands) jazz pianist Boelo Klat, on which he lets his heart speak.

Boelo Klat is a sensitive pianist and composer who let the music speak for itself. For his new album MUSIC he composed new work and re-arranged old pieces. ‘Loss’ is an important theme. For example, he composed the beautiful Reverie for Olivier (for his deceased stepson) and is Music for Hugo (for his son who says goodbye to music after a computer crash), in which we hear the influence of Keith Jarrett. Mevrouwtje is an ode to his former dog and Light of Paris was written in memory of the victims of the attacks in Paris, 2015. In addition, Hymne is a work for his deceased father-in-law.

In all these pieces we hear Klat in subdued play, thoughtful, musing and telling in pronounced themes, supplemented with beautiful improvisations in which he plays beautiful variations, which gives the music a little more air.

Yet after all this somewhat meditative work, there are also some lighter pieces on MUSIC, such as Skippy. Due to the stride piano style and the angular chords, a clear link can be heard here to Thelonious Monk, but also to George Shearing. The blind master pianist who became so famous for his driving left hand with the pumping-on-the-beat chords.

The last two pieces Daydream and Rothko are songs without words where the melody, the theme is sometimes hidden in the harmonies, followed by subtle solos with here and there a ‘secret’ blue note. In this, Boelo Klat returns to his intention and thus to the essence of his album MUSIC on which he develops into a musical storyteller who has masterfully put his inner self on the musical line!
