In een wervelwind van hammond-orgel, Fender Rhodes, clavinet en analoge synthesizer horen we klaviervirtuoos Claudio Corona op zijn nieuwe album Imagination Unlimited.

Claudio Corona is een musicus uit Sardinië (Italië), die zo’n 20 jaar geleden naar Londen emigreerde. Daar specialiseerde hij zich in jazz, soul, rock, pop en vooral funk en surfsound, gaf hij veel optredens en werkte als componist en producer. Hij speelde regelmatig met gitarist Paul Garner, die nu ook te horen is op zijn nieuwe album Imagination Unlimited.

De hammond staat in het middelpunt van zijn muziek. Zelf speelt hij ook alle baspartijen en wordt hij bijgestaan door musici op gitaar, drums/ percussie en hier en daar vocalen en blazers. Op ingenieuze wijze vlecht hij de hammond-, piano- en clavinet-partijen in elkaar. Je wordt geleid door een spannend muzikaal labyrint, met arrangementen die verdraaid knap in elkaar zitten. De verschillende keyboard-structuren passen als een puzzel in elkaar, waarbij de partijen elkaar complementair aanvullen en inkleuren, aangevuld met strakke drums en ritmische gitaar-rifs. Er ontstaat zo een fraai en vlammend (funk-)palet met ingenieuze thema’s en B-gedeelten.

Zo wordt het hammond-thema unisono gespeeld met piano in Hittin’ The Strip (met heerlijk groovy gitaar) en is Rattlesnake een aaneenschakeling van hammond, clavinet en piano. Het album staat vol instrumentale stukken, op het middelmatig geslaagde, gezongen titelstuk Imagination Unlimited na, dat met een gelaagd surfsound-imago toch nog enig soelaas biedt. Deze prachtige surfsound komen we ook tegen in Apollo 73 (met lekkere wahwah-gitaar) en in Sirene’s Call, waar de fonetische gezongen vrouwenstem zorgt voor een heerlijk seventies timbre, aangevuld met dwarsfluit-solo. Terwijl we in Top Hat naast een strakke clavinet, ook strakke blazers horen, aangevuld met fraai gekozen Weather Report-aandoende akkoorden (Joe Zawinul), die voor een fijn vervreemdend effect zorgen.

Claudio Corona is een meester op zijn keyboards die op Imagination Unlimited laat horen dat hij naast een voortreffelijk instrumentalist ook een bevlogen componist en arrangeur is.

In a whirlwind of Hammond organ, Fender Rhodes, clavinet and analogue synthesizer we hear keyboard virtuoso Claudio Corona on his new album Imagination Unlimited.

Claudio Corona is a musician from Sardinia (Italy), who emigrated to London about 20 years ago. There he specialized in jazz, soul, rock, pop and especially funk and surf sound, gave many concerts and worked as a composer and producer. He regularly played with guitarist Paul Garner, who can now also be heard on his new album Imagination Unlimited.

The Hammond is at the center of his music. He also plays all the bass parts himself and is supported by musicians on guitar, drums/percussion and here and there vocals and wind instruments. He ingeniously interweaves the Hammond, piano and clavinet parts. You are led through an exciting musical labyrinth, through arrangements that are very cleverly put together. The various keyboard structures tightly fit, like a puzzle, with the parts complementing and colouring each other, supplemented by tight drums and rhythmic guitar riffs. This creates a beautiful and fiery (funk) palette with ingenious themes and B-parts.

For example, the Hammond theme is played in unison with piano in Hittin’ The Strip (with a wonderfully groovy guitar) and Rattlesnake is a combination of Hammond, clavinet and piano. The album is full of instrumental pieces, except for the mediocrely successful, sung title piece Imagination Unlimited, which still offers some solace with a layered surf sound image. We also encounter this beautiful surf sound in Apollo 73 (with a nice wah-wah guitar) and in Sirene’s Call, where the phonetically sung female voice provides a wonderful seventies timbre, supplemented by a transverse flute solo. While in Top Hat there is a tight brass, in addition to a tight clavinet, supplemented with beautifully chosen Weather Report-like chords (Joe Zawinul), which provide a nice alienating effect.

Claudio Corona is a master on his keyboards who shows on Imagination Unlimited that he is not only an excellent instrumentalist but also an inspired composer and arranger!
