Op het album Soma horen we het trio met Peppe Frana op ûd (Arabische luit), rebab (Afghaans snaarinstrument), Masih Karimi op tanbur (langhalsluit) en daf (handtrommel) and Ciro Montanari op tabla (kleine Indiase handtrommels) en percussie. Alle stukken zijn gecomponeerd door Karimi en Frana en worden gelardeerd met traditioneel werk.

Het trio bestaat uit musici die hun instrument virtuoos beheersen. Op organische wijze en met een natuurlijke cohesie vlechten de verschillende partijen zich naadloos in elkaar en vormen één fraaie kleur. Dat is duidelijk hoorbaar in Agni, waarbij de maat- en tempowisselingen het stuk een verhalend karakter bezorgen, naast, bijvoorbeeld Amauri. Deze wonderlijk mooie compositie start met een taqsim, waarna percussie (tabla en udu: vaastrommel) de compositie vaart en energie geven, die wordt overgoten met een unisono gespeelde melodie die steeds heftiger wordt.

Een taqsim is een intro die de luisteraar de tijd geeft om aan de tonaliteit te ‘wennen’. Veel van de stukken op Soma starten met een taqsim waarin de instrumentalist de tijd krijgt om de compositie in te leiden: verhalend en virtuoos. Ook Sarab begint met een taqsim, waarna de percussie energiek het thema ondersteund dat ook weer unisono wordt gespeeld tanbur en rebab, met verderop een opvallend mooie tabla-solo.

Soma is een album met een hoog contemplatief gehalte waar muzikaliteit en virtuositeit zo mooi tegen elkaar worden uitgespeeld dat je bijna vergeet hoe vakbekwaam deze musici zijn.

Soma is the debut album of the musicians Peppe Frana, Masih Karimi and Ciro Montanari who perform Iranian, Kurdish, Indian and their own compositions in a virtuoso manner.

On the album Soma we hear the trio with Peppe Frana plays the ûd (Arabic lute), rebab (Afghan string instrument), Masih Karimi plays tanbur (long-necked lute) and daf (hand drum) and Ciro Montanari plays tabla (small Indian hand drums) and percussion. All pieces are composed by Karimi and Frana and are interspersed with traditional work.

The trio consists of musicians who master their instrument in a virtuoso manner. In an organic way and with a natural cohesion, the different parts intertwine seamlessly and form one beautiful color. This is clearly audible in Agni, where the changes in time and tempo give the piece a narrative character, next to, for example, Amauri. This wonderfully and beautiful composition starts with a taqsim, after which percussion (tabla and udu: vase drum) give the music momentum and energy, which is covered by a melody played in unison that becomes increasingly intense.

A taqsim is an intro that gives the listener time to ‘get used to’ the tonality. Many of the pieces on Soma start with a taqsim in which the instrumentalist is given time to introduce the composition: narrative and virtuoso. Sarab also starts with a taqsim, after which the percussion energetically supports the theme that is also played in unison tanbur and rebab, with a strikingly beautiful, with a tabla solo further on.

Soma is an album with a high contemplative content where musicality and virtuosity are played off against each other so beautifully that you almost forget how skilled these musicians are.
