De band Dlù uit Glasgow (Schotland) verkent op innovatieve wijze het folkspectrum op Close to.

Na hun debuut-album Moch uit 2022 gaat het kwintet Dlù op zoek naar een nieuwe muzikale aanpak. Tegen een dance- en popachtergrond vinden ritme, timbre (sfeer) en melodie elkaar in krachtige, opzwepende folk-muziek. Veelal instrumentale stukken, gelardeerd met rijke synthesizer-partijen, bas- en gitaar-structuren en viool-thema’s, met hier en daar doedelzak en accordeon-kleuren. Composities beginnen over het algemeen met een sobere inzet, waarna synthesizers volgen, de drums en bas invallen en het thema langzaam uitgroeit tot heerlijk enerverende en soms zelfs bombastische folk-rockmuziek. De drumpartijen zetten de sfeer aan in een four-on-the-floor groove. De folk zit stevig verankerd in het repertoire. Zo zijn de thema’s vaak in triolen (in 3-en), wat ook gebeurt in de ritmiek, zoals mooi te horen in Mogaisean, een van de twee zangstukken. De andere vocale compositie is A Mhic Iain ‘Ic Sheumais. Een prachtig traditioneel lied over een oorlog, begin 17de eeuw, innemend gezongen door violiste en zangeres Moilidh NicGriogair.

Hoogtepunt is het nummer Close To, P.T. 1, waar op inventieve wijze wordt gespeeld met ritme, variatie en schitterende thema’s. Dat wordt fraai voortgezet in het daaropvolgende Close To, P.T. 2, met o.a. pulserende synthesizer en fuzzy gitaarsolo.

Wat moet het geweldig zijn om deze Dlù een keer live mee te maken en te worden meegevoerd in een warm folk-bad!

The band Dlù from Glasgow (Scotland) explores the folk spectrum in an innovative way on their new album Close to.

After their debut album Moch from 2022, the quintet Dlù is looks for a new musical approach. Against a dance and pop background, rhythm, timbre (atmosphere) and melody find each other in powerful, rousing music. Mostly instrumental pieces, interspersed with rich synthesizer parts, bass and guitar structures and violin themes, with bagpipes and accordion colors here and there. Compositions generally start with a sober entry, after which synthesizers follow, drums and bass join in and the theme slowly grows into wonderfully exciting and sometimes even bombastic folk-rock music.The drum parts set the mood in a four-on-the-floor groove. Folk is firmly anchored in the repertoire. For example, the themes are often in triplets (in 3s), which also happens in the rhythm, as can be heard beautifully in Mogaisean, one of the two vocal pieces. The other vocal composition is A Mhic Iain ‘Ic Sheumais. A beautiful traditional song about a war, early 17th century, wonderful sung by violinist and singer Moilidh NicGriogair.

The highlight is the composition Close To, P.T. 1, which plays inventively with rhythm, variation and beautiful themes. This is wonderfully continued in the following Close To, P.T. 2, with pulsating synthesizer and fuzzy guitar solo.

How wonderful it must be to experience this band Dlù live and be carried away in a warm folk bath!
