De Italiaanse gitarist en componist Filippo Cosentino brengt met ASK een opmerkelijke CD op de markt.

Gitarist Filippo Cosentino is een compositorisch componist met een groot gevoel voor thema’s, melodieën en variaties. Hij studeerde aan het Conservatorium in Bologna. Hij is een gevierd musicus in zijn geboorteland, schreef strijkkwartetten, soundtracks voor films en werkte samen met zangeres Andrea Miro, bassist Mauro Ermanno Giovanardi en de jazzmusicus Rita Marcotulli en nu met de Amerikaanse toppianist Marc Copland. Met hem nam hij samen met drummer Daniele Bertone, die we ook al tegenkwamen in het kwartet van saxofonist Carlo Actis Dato, de CD ASK op.

Het album is een aaneenschakeling van beeldend mooie composities van drie musici die elkaar naadloos aanvullen en in elkaars verlengde musiceren. Bovendien heeft de CD een bijzondere audio-opzet waarbij het akoestische gitaarwerk van Cosentino op de voorgrond klinkt, zonder galm en andere effecten. Zijn spel klinkt fris en helder. Het pianowerk van Copland is geplaatst in een lichte galm, waardoor deze iets naar achteren wordt geplaatst in het audio-spectrum, terwijl het drumwerk van Bertoni in een brede schakering het ritmisch aan elkaar smeedt. Wellicht een wat technisch verhaal, maar hier is over nagedacht, hierdoor krijgt de muziek een fijne diepgang. Daarnaast wordt de begeleiding in de piano-solo’s beperkt tot drumwerk, dus nauwelijks gitaar. Ook een opvallende keuze.

Het album opent met Leeway, waarbij het gitaarwerk met een piano-cross-rhythm wordt overgoten, waarna een funky thema klinkt op gitaar. Dit wordt aangevuld met strakke akkoorden van piano en drums, met in de brug (B-gedeelte) een orgelpunt (steeds dezelfde toon) op gitaar. Over het algemeen zijn de stukken ‘liederen-zonder-woorden’, met fraaie harmonieën die het thema intens mooi kleuren zoals in Beneath, waarbij Cosentino heel subtiel het thema speelt onder de piano-solo. Het bluesy-intro van 581G ontpopt zich in een 3-tels folksong tot een warme melodie met een fijne Bill Frisell-touch. De alternative-take, die als nö 7 is toegevoegd, heeft een meer Gospel-touché dat de melodie zeer ten goede komt. Mermaid is een jazz-georiënteerd stuk waar gitaar en piano elkaar ondersteunen met unisono riffs en accenten.

Filippo Cosentino is een groot gitarist en componist, met een ferme gitaar-techniek die zich niet verschuilt achter effecten of anderszins. Gewoon goede stukken componeren en ze gedegen en zonder poeha uitvoeren met vakbekwame musici. Dat is ASK!

Italian guitarist and composer Filippo Cosentino recorded the remarkable album ASK.

Guitarist Filippo Cosentino is a compositional composer with a great feeling for themes, melodies and variations. He studied at the Conservatory in Bologna. He is a celebrated musician in his native country, wrote string quartets, soundtracks for films and worked with singer Andrea Miro, bassist Mauro Ermanno Giovanardi and jazz musician Rita Marcotulli and now with American top pianist Marc Copland. With him he recorded the CD ASK, together with drummer Daniele Bertone, who we also encountered in the quartet of saxophonist Carlo Actis Dato.

The album is a combination of visually beautiful compositions by three musicians who complement each other seamlessly and play music in each other’s extension. Moreover, the CD has a special audio design in which Cosentino’s acoustic guitar work is in the foreground, without reverb and other effects. His playing sounds fresh and clear. Copland’s piano work is placed in a light reverb, which places it somewhat to the back in the audio spectrum, while Bertoni’s drumming in a broad range forges it together rhythmically. Perhaps a somewhat technical story, but this has been thought through. This gives the music a nice depth. In addition, the accompaniment in the piano solos is limited to drumming, so hardly any guitar. Also a striking choice.

The album opens with Leeway, in which the guitar work is doused with a piano cross-rhythm, after which a funky theme sounds on guitar. This is supplemented with tight chords of piano and drums, with an organ point (always the same tone) on guitar in the bridge. In general, the pieces are ‘songs-without-words’, with beautiful harmonies that colour the theme intensely beautifully, such as in Beneath, in which Cosentino very subtly plays the theme under the piano solo. The bluesy intro of 581G develops into a nice 3-beat folk song with a warm melody and a nice Bill Frisell touch. The alternative take, which is added as nö 7, has a more Gospel touch that benefits the melody very much. Mermaid is a jazz-oriented piece where guitar and piano support each other with unison riffs and accents.

Filippo Cosentino is a great guitarist and composer, with a firm guitar technique that does not hide behind effects or otherwise. Just composing good pieces and performing them solidly and without fuss, with skilled musicians. That is ASK!
