Hoe lokaal kan (folk)muziek zijn? Nou zeer…! Getuige het album Sik Og Sejs (Kom en Ga) van de drie musici (ULC): violist Peter Uhrbrand, accordeonist Sonnich Lydom en de Ierse snarenspeler Seamus Cahill die tegenwoordig ook in Denemarken woont.

De muziek van dit album komt van het eiland Fanø dat vlak voor de westkust van Denemarken ligt en iets kleiner is dan Texel. Traditionele, instrumentale muziek die mondeling werd overgeleverd. Er werd niets opgeschreven en iedere muzikant voegde in de loop der jaren zijn eigen accenten toe. Deze CD werd al eerder uitgebracht in 1999 en komt nu, na 25 jaar, opnieuw op de markt.

De musici van ULC hebben een sprankelende instrumentbeheersing waarmee ze moeiteloos de thema’s spelen, waarbij melodie en begeleiding soepel in elkaar grijpen. Dat doen ze in verschillende bezettingen. Soms twee en dan weer drie instrumenten, al dan niet aangevuld door een van de vier gastmusici op tabla, tuba en percussie. De muziek klinkt ontspannen en is sober en klein van opzet. Met respect voor de muzikale traditie speelt het trio veelal dansmuziek met een vitale expressie en met een natuurlijke vanzelfsprekendheid die sympathie afdwingt.

Het album wordt opgedragen aan Peder Brinch wiens familie een van de belangrijkste muzikale bronnen was. Derhalve eindigt het album met een korte fonograaf-opname uit 1916, waarin we Brinch het thema horen zingen van het openingslied Allemagasej. Hoe authentiek wil je het hebben…

Sik Og Sejs is the organically beautiful CD by the trio ULC that plays traditional music from the island of Fanø (Denmark).

How local can (folk) music be? Well, very…! Witness the album Sik Og Sejs (Come and Go) by the three musicians (ULC): violinist Peter Uhrbrand, accordionist Sonnich Lydom and the Irish string player Seamus Cahill who now also lives in Denmark.

The music on this album comes from the island of Fanø that lies just off the west coast of Denmark and is slightly smaller than the Dutch island Texel. Traditional, instrumental music that was passed down orally. Nothing was written down and each musician added his own accents over the years. This CD was previously released in 1999 and is now, after 25 years, being released again.

The musicians of ULC have a sparkling instrument control with which they effortlessly play the themes, with melody and accompaniment smoothly interlocking. They do this in various formations. Sometimes two and then again three instruments, sometimes supplemented by one of the four guest musicians on tabla, tuba and percussion. The music sounds relaxed and is sober and small in performance. With respect for the musical tradition, the trio plays mostly dance music with a vital expression and with a natural self-evidence that commands sympathy.

The album is dedicated to Peder Brinch, whose family was one of the most important musical sources. Therefore, the album ends with a short phonograph recording from 1916, in which we hear Brinch sing the theme of the opening song Allemagasej. How authentic can music be…
