De Oekraïense zangeres Nastasia Y brengt vanuit Canada haar album Kyiv Soul uit met muziek die haar muzikale wortels heeft in Kiev.

Nastasia Y werd geboren in Kiev, maar verhuisde lang voor de oorlog, op haar elfde naar Toronto (Canada). Haar overleden vader, Kost’ Yerofeyev, was de protestzanger van de provincie Ruthenia. Hij stond aan de wieg van de onafhankelijkheidsbeweging in de jaren ’80 in Kiev. Nastasia Y is een geschoold musicus die jazz studeerde aan het Humber College en klassieke muziek aan het Associate of the Royal Conservatory.

Op het album Kyiv Soul klinkt een organische mix van jazz, gelardeerd met Oekraïense volksliederen en aangevuld met funk en pop. Haar muziek is doordrenkt met dushevna, de Oekraïense ziel. Te vergelijken met de sevdah uit Bosnië en Herzegovina, de Spaanse duende of de Portugese saudade. Er spelen 8 musici mee op gitaar, toetsen, fluit, bas, drums en achtergrondzang die haar vocalen ferm ondersteunen. Bijzonder is het gebruik van de synthesizer die de muziek soms een heerlijke klankkleur uit 80’s bezorgt, zoals in Stolen Green en het slotlied Bez Vas. Een schitterende ode aan Volodymyr Zelensky, de president van Oekraïne.

Innemend fraai zijn de plotselinge arrangement-wendingen die de dushevna even laten opkomen om vervolgens te worden overgoten met stevige gitaarsolo’s (prachtig in Love until Dawn en Spring Willow) om daarna terug te keren naar de dushevna. Mooi is ook het lied Gusta mi Magla. Een Servisch lied in een 7-tels maat met een strakke synthesizer-solo.

De teksten handelen over bezetting, oorlog, maar ook over de lente en een (veerkrachtig) nieuw begin en worden gezongen in het Oekraïens, Crimean en Engels. Natasia’s stem klinkt prachtig fragiel (zoals in Pod Oblachkom), maar ook vol vuur en heeft voortdurend een eigen, herkenbare klankkleur. Kyiv Soul is een zeer bijzondere CD die tegen een achtergrond van decennia-lange (oorlogs-)ellende heel diep en ontroerend overkomt.

Ukrainian singer Nastasia Y releases her album Kyiv Soul from Canada with music that has its musical roots in Kiev.

Nastasia Y was born in Kiev, but moved to Toronto (Canada) long before the war, at the age of eleven. Her deceased father, Kost’ Yerofeyev, was the protest singer of Ruthenia and stoot at the cradle of the independence movement in the 80s in Kiev. Nastasia Y is a trained musician who studied jazz at Humber College and classical music at the Associate of the Royal Conservatory.

The album Kyiv Soul contains an organic mix of jazz, interspersed with Ukrainian folk songs and supplemented with funk and pop. Her music is imbued with dushevna, the Ukrainian soul. Comparable to the sevdah from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Spanish duende or the Portuguese saudade. Eight musicians play on guitar, keyboards, flute, bass, drums and backing vocals, who firmly support her vocals. The use of the synthesizer is special, sometimes giving the music a lovely 80’s timbre, as in Stolen Green and the closing song Bez Vas. A wonderful ode to Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine.

The sudden changes in arrangement are endearingly beautiful, allowing the dushevna to briefly emerge and then being covered in solid guitar solos (beautiful in Love until Dawn and Spring Willow) and then returning back to the dushevna. The song Gusta mi Magla is also excellent. This Serbian song in a 7-time beat is reinforced with a tight synthesizer solo.

The lyrics are about occupation, war, but also about spring and a (resilient) new beginning and are sung in Ukrainian, Crimean and English. Natasia’s voice sounds beautifully fragile (as in Pod Oblachkom), but also full of fire and always has its own, recognizable timbre. Kyiv Soul is a very special album that sounds really moving against the background of decades of (war) misery.
