Carla Pires brengt met haar nieuwe CD VaiVem een ode aan haar 20-jarige jubileum als fado-zangeres.

De Portugese zangeres Carla Pires brengt met VaiVem een ode aan 2 decennia vakmanschap als fadista. Ze startte haar zangcarrière in 1993, nam 5 CD’s op, gaf concerten over de hele wereld, waaronder ook in het Concertgebouw en Theater De la Mar in Amsterdam en in de Schouwburg van Rotterdam en speelde de hoofdrol in de musical Amalia. Een muziekvoorstelling over het leven van de legendarische fadista Amalia Rodrigues (1920-1999).

Nu is er het album VaiVem waarop ze terugkijkt op een glansrijke carrière. Op deze CD zijn de groten uit de Portugese fado-wereld te horen, waaronder tekstdichter Amelia Muge, guitarra Portguesa spelers Custódio Castelo (Cristina Branco), Luis Guerreiro en de gitaristen Andre M. Santos (Mariza, Mísia en Cuca Roseta) en Antonio Neto.

Pires heeft dat ontspannen maar toch ook dat meeslepende en ontroerende in haar stem. Met de juiste dosering brengt ze elk lied tot een hoogtepunt. In wisselende bezetting horen we 17 fado’s. Soms verhalend gezongen zoals Aprendo o meu coracao, of het openingslied Dia de balanco waarin ze begeleid wordt op akoestisch gitaar die met een bloemrijke begeleiding haar stem oneindig mooi inkleurt. De muziek is verstild en ingetogen, zoals Cheguei aqui, waar de guitarra Poruguesa haar vocalen heerlijk omspeelt. Om verderop te worden onthaald in het door Pires zelf gecomponeerde Partir. Een afscheidslied met een ongelooflijk mooie melodie, waarin de contrabas zowel strijkend (con arco) als plukkend wordt bespeeld, de gitaar glooiend begeleid en de guitarra Poruguesa de melodie weer fraai omspeelt en complementair aanvult.

Alhoewel elk stuk zijn eigen instrumentatie heeft en er afwisseling is in het gebruik van gitaar, guitara Portuguesa, piano (solo in Voltar a ser criança), hier en daar percussie, basgitaar en achtergrondzang (in Vida Nova) blijft de fado-kleur onmiskenbaar aanwezig. Het album ViaVem is een kroon op haar werk, waarmee Carla Pires bewijst dat ze nog steeds een van grootste fado-zangeressen is!

Carla Pires pays tribute to her 20th anniversary as a fado singer with her new album VaiVem.

With the CD VaiVem, Portuguese singer Carla Pires pays tribute to 2 decades of craftsmanship as a fadista. She started her singing career in 1993, recorded 5 CDs, gave concerts all over the world, including in the Concertgebouw and Theater De la Mar in Amsterdam and in the Schouwburg in Rotterdam (Netherlands), and played the leading role in the musical Amalia. A musical performance about the life of the legendary fadista Amalia Rodrigues (1920-1999).

Now there is the album VaiVem on which she looks back on a brilliant career. On this CD you can hear the greats of the Portuguese fado world, including lyricist Amelia Muge, guitarra Portguesa players Custódio Castelo (Cristina Branco) and Luis Guerreiro and guitarists Andre M. Santos (Mariza, Mísia and Cuca Roseta) and Antonio Neto.

Pires has that relaxed but also that compelling and moving timbre in her voice. With the right dosage she brings every song to a high level. In varying line-up we hear 17 fados. Sometimes sung narratively such as Aprendo o meu coracao, or the opening song Dia de balanco, in which she is accompanied by acoustic guitar that colors her voice infinitely beautifully with a flowery accompaniment. The music is quiet and subdued, such as Cheguei aqui, where the guitarra Poruguesa plays wonderful variations to her vocals. To be welcomed further on in the song Partir, composed by Pires herself. A farewell song with an incredibly beautiful melody, in which the double bass is played both bowed (con arco) and plucked, the guitar accompanies gently and the guitarra Poruguesa beautifully plays around the melody and complements it.

Although each piece has its own instrumentation and there is variation in the use of guitar, guitara Portuguesa, piano (solo in Voltar a ser criança), here and there percussion, bass guitar and background vocals (in Vida Nova), the fado color remains unmistakably present. The album ViaVem is a crowning achievement for Carla Pires, with which she proves that she is still one of the greatest fado singers!
