Na 20 jaar is het feest voor het duo Naragonia dat ze met vrienden vierden tijdens een live-concert, wat nu verschenen is op het album Naragonia & Guests LIVE.

Het duo Naragonia ontstaat spontaan in 2003 als Pascale Rubens (diatonisch accordeon, viool en zang) en Toon Van Mierlo (doedelzak, diatonisch accordeon en sopraansax) elkaar ontmoeten tijdens het festival Andanças in Portugal. Nu, 9 albums en 20 jaar verder, is het tijd voor een feest dat gegeven werd met 13 gastmusici tijdens een live-concert in de Schouwburg van Leuven. Het CD-label Trad Records was erbij en verzorgde de opname. En dat is maar goed ook, want de muziek is adembenemend en nu voor altijd beschikbaar.
Wie van (new) folk houdt, zal smullen van deze bijzondere LIVE-CD. Alle stukken werden gecomponeerd door Rubens en Van Mierlo (met teksten van Reineke Van Hooreweghe) en gearrangeerd voor folk-big-band. In wisselende bezetting werden de composities uitgevoerd, van klein subtiel in Astor of Les Deux Frères voor 2 accordeons dat zich ontpopt van 2- naar 3-tels maat…tot vrolijk en stuwend zoals in Calimero of met een heerlijke Bretonse signatuur in Hellebore. Iets wat we ook tegenkomen in het werk Gooik, maar dan in een 7-tels maat waarin de accordeon de hoofdrol heeft, strak ondersteund door puntige percussie, die even uit zijn bol gaat in een solo.
Werkelijk prachtig (en opvallend mooi qua tekst, melodie, zang en uitvoering) is het lied Is het nog ver, waarin de innemende en beminnelijke zang van Charlotte van Mierlo ervoor zorgt dat je even uit je evenwicht wordt gebracht.
Voor dit twintigjarig jubileum werden bevriende musici ingeschakeld zoals accordeonist Simone Bottasso. Gilles Chabenat op draailier, Andy Cutting: diatonisch accordeon, Maarten Decombel: gitaar, mandola, Philippe Laloy: sopraansax, Simon Leleux en Jo Zanders: percussie, Vincent Noiret: contrabas, Luc Pilartz: viool, Véronique Rubens: piano, Guy Swinnen: zang, Charlotte Van Mierlo: zang en Mathijs Van Mierlo: trompet. Een hele lijst van bekwame musici die hun sporen binnen het folk-metier ruimschoots hebben verdiend.
Ja, en of je nu van folk houdt of niet, de CD Naragonia & Guests LIVE is vakwerk, wat qua compositie en uitvoering ver boven het gemiddelde uitstijgt en nu al een klassieker is!

After 20 years, the duo Naragonia celebrated it with friends during a live concert, which has now been released on the album Naragonia & Guests LIVE.
The duo Naragonia emerged spontaneously in 2003 when Pascale Rubens (diatonic accordion, violin and vocals) and Toon Van Mierlo (bagpipes, diatonic accordion and soprano sax) met during the Andanças festival in Portugal. Now, 9 albums and 20 years later, it is time for a party that was given with 13 guest musicians during a live concert in the Leuven Theater (Belgium). The CD label Trad Records was there and took care of the recording. And that’s a good thing, because the music is breathtaking and now available forever.
Anyone who loves (new) folk will enjoy this special LIVE CD. All pieces were composed by Rubens and Van Mierlo (with lyrics by Reineke Van Hooreweghe) and arranged for folk big band. The compositions were performed in varying formations, from small subtle in Astor or Les Deux Frères for 2 accordions that evolves from 2 to 3 beats… to cheerful and driving as in Calimero or with a wonderful Breton signature in Hellebore. Something we also encounter in the work Gooik, but in a 7-beat bar in which the accordion plays the leading role, tightly supported by tight percussion, which goes crazy in a solo.
Truly beautiful (and strikingly beautiful in terms of text, melody, singing and performance) is the song Is het nog ver (Is it still far away), in which the endearing and amiable singing of Charlotte van Mierlo ensures that you are thrown off balance for a moment.
Musician friends were brought in for this twentieth anniversary, such as accordionist Simone Bottasso.
