Vanuit Toronto (Canada) laat Ahmed Moneka zich op Kanzafula horen in een aanstekelijke Arab-Afro cross-over-mix.

Ahmed Moneka is acteur, schrijver en muzikant. Sinds 2015 woont hij in Toronto aangezien zijn leven in Irak niet meer veilig was na het acteren in een film over homorechten.

Op Kanzafula horen we een patchwork van Arabische, Afrikaanse en Westerse signatuur. De Arabische cultuur leerde hij in zijn geboorteland Irak: de makam (Arabische toonsoorten), het gebruik van Arabsiche instrumenten als de ûd en Arabische percussie. De Afrikaanse signatuur leerde hij van zijn (groot)ouders die een Keniaanse achtergrond hebben en horen we vooral terug in de poly-ritmiek in zijn muziek. In zijn tegenwoordige woonplaats Toronto leerde hij veel bekwame (jazz)musici kennen die de invloed in zijn muziek nog verder verbreedde.

Het resultaat is een super-cross-over-mix, te horen op zijn debuut-album Kazafula. De arrangementen zijn een avontuurlijke expeditie waarbij de zang van Ahmed als een boegbeeld boven de muziek uit stijgt. Hij zingt over de oorlog waarin hij op zoek gaat naar vrede en liefde in Aman. De schitterende duo-traditional Chil Mali Wali (Roots), geschreven door Youssef Omar, handelt over het op-jezelf-teruggeworpen worden in slechte tijden. Een lied in twee versies: een Arabische met een lyrisch ûd-intro, gevolgd door een westerse versie met volledige band, inclusief voor- en nazang. 90 Days is een retrospectief lied waarin Ahmed Moneka terugkijkt op zijn leven. Een ritmische compositie die hij schreef met snarenspeler Demetrios Petsalakis, met wie hij nog enkele stukken componeerde.

In zijn band treffen we keyboards, gitaar, ûd, drums, bas en blazers aan, waaronder klarinet en saxen. Bijzonder is de kora. De West-Afrikaanse harp in het lied Treed Trooh in een ode aan zijn Bagdad, de hoofdstad van Irak. Het album eindigt met de opzwepende Tunesische klassieker Sidi Mansour, een religieus loflied.

Ahmed Moneka is een bevlogen zanger en componist die met Kazafula maar weer eens bewijst dat muziek grenzeloos is: zowel qua stijl als qua uitvoering en daarmee de wereld een klein beetje verenigt!

From Toronto (Canada), Ahmed Moneka makes himself heard on Kanzafula in a catchy Arab-Afro crossover mix.

Ahmed Moneka is an actor, writer and musician. Since 2015 he lives in Toronto because his life was no longer safe in Iraq after acting in a film about gay rights.

On his album Kanzafula we hear a patchwork of Arabic, African and Western signatures. He learned Arabic culture in his native Iraq: the makam (Arabic scale), the use of Arabic instruments such as the ûd and Arabic percussion. He learned the African signature from his (grand)parents who have a Kenyan background and we hear it mainly in the poly rhythms in his music. In his current hometown of Toronto he met many skilled (jazz) musicians who further broadened the influence in his music.

The result is a super crossover mix, which can be heard on his debut album Kazafula. The arrangements are an adventurous expedition in which Ahmed’s vocals rise above the music like a figurehead. He sings about the war in which he searches for peace and love in Aman. The beautiful duo-traditional Chil Mali Wali (Roots), written by Youssef Omar, is about being thrown back on yourself in bad times. A song in two versions: an Arabic one with a lyrical ûd intro, followed by a Western version with a full band, including call- and respond vocals. 90 Days is a retrospective song in which Moneka looks back on his life. A rhythmic composition that he wrote with string player Demetrios Petsalakis, with whom he composed several more pieces.

In his band we find keyboards, guitar, ûd, drums, bass and brass instruments, including clarinet and saxes. The kora is special. The West African harp in the song Treed Trooh. An ode to Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. The album ends with the stirring Tunisian classic Sidi Mansour, a religious song.

Ahmed Moneka is an enthusiastic singer and composer who proves with Kazafula once again that music is limitless: both in terms of style and performance and unites the world a little bit!
