Op haar nieuwe album Tu Gulî (Jij Bent een Roos) schittert de Koerdische zangeres Olcay Bayir. Op deze CD zingt ze 10 traditionele liederen die zijn gearrangeerd in een sobere bezetting van gitaar, bas, percussie, kopuz (Turks snaarinstrument), zurna en duduk (soort hobo) en ûd (Arabische luit).

De muziek is puur, ingetogen en heeft een empathische diepgang die nog het meest tot uiting komt in de vocalen van Olcay Bayir. Ze zingt Anatolische melodieën waarin het leven van de vrouwen een rol speelt: uithuwelijking, de sociale status of het openingslied Husna, dat vaak werd gezongen door Bayir’s grootmoeder. Maar ook de verwoestende gebeurtenis uit de Armeense geschiedenis waaronder de genocide uit 1915 (in het lied Adana) komt aan bod. Bijzonder is ook het lied Nara Nare. Een prachtige Armeense melodie waarin het meisje Nare wordt bezongen: Zoals jij bent, is er maar een, mijn hart staat in brand… In de begeleiding horen we de geweldige Syrisch-Griekse (met Armeense achtergrond) ûd-speler Haig Yazdjian die in 2001 het weergaloze album Yeraz uitbracht. Op duduk horen we Arsen Petrosyan die in 2021 zijn verhalend album Hokin Janapar uitbracht.

Olcay Bayir werd geboren in het zuiden van Turkije maar verhuisde met haar familie naar Londen in 1998. Aanvankelijk gaat ze zang studeren, maar komt er al gauw achter dat de liefde voor muziek vooral uitgaat naar de melodieën uit haar geboorteland. In 2014 kwam haar debuut-CD Neva uit met Anatolische liedjes gezongen in het Turks, Koerdisch, Armeens, Grieks en Ladino (taal van de Sefardische joden). Haar 2de album Ruya bevatte eigen werk en is uit 2019.

Door de jaren heen groeide Bayir uit tot een toonaangevende zangeres die het Anatolisch cultureel erfgoed (letterlijk) een stem geeft: bevlogen, overtuigend en met respect!

The singer Olcay Bayir is the undisputed leader of Anatolian song in the west.

Kurdish singer Olcay Bayir stars on her new album Tu Gulî (You Are a Rose). On this CD she sings 10 traditional songs that are arranged in a sober arrangement of guitar, bass, percussion, kopuz (Turkish string instrument), zurna and duduk (type of oboe) and ûd (Arabic lute).

The music is pure, subdued and has an empathetic depth that is most reflected in the vocals of Olcay Bayir. She sings Anatolian melodies in which the lives of the women play a role: arranged marriages, social status or the opening song Husna, which was often sung by Bayir’s grandmother. But the devastating event in Armenian history, including the 1915 genocide we hear in the song Adana. Nara Nare is also special one. A beautiful Armenian melody which is an ode to the girl Nare: As you are, there is only one, my heart is on fire… In the accompaniment we hear the great Syrian-Greek (with Armenian background) ûd player Haig Yazdjian who played the released the unprecedented album Yeraz. On duduk we hear Arsen Petrosyan who released his narrative album Hokin Janapar in 2021.

Olcay Bayir was born in the south of Turkey but moved with her family to London in 1998. She initially studied singing, but soon discovered that her love for music mainly focused on the melodies from her native country. In 2014, her debut CD Neva was released with Anatolian songs sung in Turkish, Kurdish, Armenian, Greek and Ladino (language of the Sephardic Jews). Her 2nd album Ruya contained her own compositions and was released in 2019.

Over the years, Bayir has grown into a leading singer who gives the Anatolian cultural heritage a voice (literally): enthusiastic, convincing and with respect!
