Er is van The Dutch Hobby-Orchestra nooit een LP of CD verschenen. Tot nu, bijna 60 jaar later, verschijnt het album Our Time met opnamen uit 1967/68. Van stof ontdaan, door de equalizer gehaald en gemastered klinkt er warme bigband muziek.

Jarenlang lagen de mastertapes van het The Dutch Hobby-Orchestra verscholen in de kast van trompettist en Soundpush studio-eigenaar Frans Mijts (1938/2022) in Blaricum. Op deze tapes staan opnames die werden gemaakt tijdens de vrije studio uren in nachtelijke sessies van een collectief musici, het zogenaamde Hobby Orkest. Wie de opnames beluistert, komt al snel tot de conclusie dat het hier niet gaat om een hobby orkest, maar om zeer professionele musici, met strakke timing, vlijmscherp samenspel en markante solo’s.

Er werden overwegend stukken gespeeld van de pianisten Frans Elsen en Rob Madna (componeerde wel, maar speelt niet mee), trombonist Cees Smal en dirigent Rogier van Otterloo. Naast deze voortreffelijke musici horen we ook de fantastische saxofonisten Piet Noordijk, Ferdinand Povel, Sander Sprong, Joop Mastenbroek en Tony Vos (later producer van o.a. Ekseption), gitarist Joop Scholten, bassist Rob Langereis en drummer Evert Overweg.

Het orkest speelde in de traditie van Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington en Count Basie. Aangezien er in de nachtelijke sessie maar weinig repetitie-tijd was en de muziek voortreffelijk klinkt, bewijst het dat we hier te maken hebben met grootheden uit de nationale jazz-scene. Destijds jonge jazz-cats als Elsen 35 jaar, Van Otterloo 25, Noordijk 35 en Langereis 28 jaar, waren bevlogen, hielden van muziek en musiceerden met een exacte en soms ook heerlijk luie timing. De merendeel up-tempo stukken hebben een organische energie waarin door alle musici enerverend wordt gesoleerd.

Alhoewel het orkest Hobby-Orkest heet en de musici ‘voor-de-lol’ speelden naast hun reguliere werk, klinkt hier wel muziek met een Gouden Randje, om tijdloos van te smullen!

No LP or CD has ever been released by The Dutch Hobby-Orchestra. Now, almost 60 years later, the album Our Time is released with recordings from 1967/68. Stripped of dust, put through the equalizer and mastered, warm big band music sounds appear.

For years, the master tapes of the Dutch Hobby-Orchestra were hidden in the closet of trumpeter and Soundpush studio owner Frans Mijts (1938/2022) in Blaricum. These tapes contain recordings that were made during the free studio hours in night-time sessions of a collective of musicians, the so-called Hobby Orkest. Anyone who listens to the recordings quickly comes to the conclusion that this is not really a hobby orchestra, but these guys are very professional musicians, with tight timing, razor-sharp ensemble playing and striking solos.

Predominantly pieces were played by pianists Frans Elsen and Rob Madna (composed, but did not participate), trombonist Cees Smal and conductor Rogier van Otterloo. In addition to these excellent musicians, we also hear saxophonists Piet Noordijk, Ferdinand Povel, Sander Sprong, Joop Mastenbroek and Tony Vos (later producer of Ekseption, among others), guitarist Joop Scholten, bassist Rob Langereis and drummer Evert Overweg.

The orchestra played in the tradition of Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Since there was little rehearsal time in the night session and the music sounds excellent, it proves that we are dealing with greats from the Dutch national jazz scene. Young jazz cats at the time: Elsen was 35 years old, Van Otterloo 25, Noordijk 35 and Langereis 28 years old were enthusiastic, loved music and made music with exact and sometimes wonderfully lazy timing. The majority of up-tempo pieces have an organic energy in which all musicians perform exciting solos.

Although the orchestra is called a Hobby-Orchestra and the musicians played ‘for fun’ in addition to their regular work, this is music of a Golden Edge, to enjoy timelessly!
