De band Otava Yo uit Sint Petersburg speelt springlevende Russische folk-rock.

De band Otava Yo wordt officieel opgericht in 2003. Door hun jarenlange ervaring als straatmuzikant en de positieve reacties van het publiek, besluiten Alexey Belkin, Alexey Skosyrev, Dmitriy Shikhardin en Peter Sergeev het serieuzer aan te pakken. Van stevige folk-punk-rock verandert de groep de stijl richting de Russische traditionele muziek en brachten ze in 2005 hun debuut-album Pod Aptekoj uit, vernoemd naar de straat-optreed-locatie in Sint Petersburg.
De grote doorbraak kwam door de YouTube hit Sumetskaya in 2015
In mei 2024 was de release van hun 11de album Loud and Clear. Een opeenstapeling van opzwepende traditionele Russische liederen die met een eigentijdse blik zijn getransformeerd tot boeiende en ontroerende muziek.
De groep bestaat uit 8 muzikanten (2 vrouwen en 6 mannen) en wordt bijgestaan door zo’n 15 gastmuzikanten. Ze bespelen het psalterium, violen, doedelzak, slagwerk (drums), (bas-)gitaar en alle muzikanten zijn bevlogen zangers. Dat is maar goed ook, want de meeste stukken (op één instrumentaal na) worden meerstemmig gezongen met teksten over het alledaagse leven, de natuur en natuurlijk de liefde. Soms meerstemmig a capella zoals frases in Ah, the Woods, maar veelal tweestemmig. De muziek is vrolijk en opgewekt met een strakke ritmische basis aangevuld met solo’s op viool, doedelzak, elektrische gitaar. Markante stops, herhalingen, humoristische riffs en breaks ondersteunen niet alleen het folkloristisch karakter maar geven de muziek ook een verfijnde vorm van virtuositeit en tilt de groep onwillekeurig naar een hoger plan. Mooi te horen in Tongue Twisters, alwaar de zangers bijna hun tong breken over de snelle tekst. Nummers als Zalivocha en It’s the Last Day hebben naast prachtige melodieën ook mooie arrangementen waarbij gitaar en violen in een vlechtwerk fraai door elkaar heen kruisen.
Otava Yo is een geweldige band die de liefde voor de Russische (vocale) cultuur zo inspirerend en overtuigend brengt, dat alleen dat al respect afdwingt: Loud and Clear (Luid en Duidelijk)!

The band Otava Yo from St. Petersburg plays lively Russian folk rock.
In 2003 the band Otava Yo was officially founded. Due to their years of experience as a street musician and the positive reactions from the audience, Alexey Belkin, Alexey Skosyrev, Dmitriy Shikhardin and Peter Sergeev decided to take it more seriously. From heavy folk-punk-rock the group changes their style towards Russian traditional music. They released their debut album Pod Aptekoj in 2005, named after the street performance location in Saint Petersburg.
The big breakthrough came with the YouTube hit Sumetskaya in 2015 (see YouTube above).
May 2024 their 11th album Loud and Clear was released. An accumulation of stirring traditional Russian songs that have been transformed into fascinating and moving music with a contemporary perspective.
The group consists of 8 musicians (2 women and 6 men) and is assisted by about 15 guest musicians. They play the psaltery, violins, bagpipes, percussion (drums), (bass) guitar and all musicians are passionate singers. That’s a good thing, because most pieces (except one instrumental) are sung polyphonically with lyrics about everyday life, nature and of course love. Sometimes polyphonic a cappella such as phrases in Ah, the Woods, but often in two-part singing. The music is cheerful with a tight rhythmic basis, supplemented with solos on violin, bagpipes and electric guitar. Striking stops, repetitions, humorous riffs and breaks not only support the folkloric character but also give the music a refined form of virtuosity and involuntarily lift the group to a higher level. Tongue Twisters is a beautiful song, where the singers almost ‘break down tongue’ over the fast lyrics. Songs such as Zalivocha and It’s the Last Day not only have beautiful melodies, but also beautiful arrangements, where guitar and violins intertwine beautifully.
Otava Yo is a great band that brings the love for Russian (vocal) culture so inspiring and convincing that that alone commands respect: Loud and Clear!
