De band Oluma brengt met hun debuut-album Cooking Time een mixing-melting-pot van West-Afrikaanse grooves met jazz, pop en funk.

Oluma werd opgericht in Berlijn in 2021 door bassist Gregor Nicolai, drummer/percussionist André van der Heide en altsaxofonist/fluitist Roman Polatsky. Alle drie componeerden zij instrumentale stukken voor het album Cooking Time. De band is verder uitgebreid met musici op baritonsax, trompet, trombone, gitaar en keyboards.

De composities dansen op de rand van pop, jazz en funk met kenmerken van Afro-beat uit Nigeria, zoals de voortreffelijke (unisono) gespeelde blazerspartijen, waar vooral de baritonsax en het gebruik van slechts enkele (soms maar één) akkoorden opvalt. Ook opvallend zijn de vlijmscherpe en organisch gespeelde drum/percussie die, samen met de bas, een strakke en groovende basis vormt. Deze is uiterst geschikt voor de uitgebalanceerde blazers partijen die soms als een vlechtwerk (zoals in Hasty Train, met funky gitaar en lovely orgel) door de muziek heen krullen en het thema tot een ware sensatie maken.

Het album staat vol wendbare solo’s op trompet, Fender Rhodes piano (met fijne vervorming) en trombone. Niet zelden leunen deze solo’s tegen de modale jazz aan en geven de muziek een werelds karakter.

Oluma zet met hun album Cooking Time een heerlijk menu op tafel: soms gevarieerd pittig, dan weer licht verteerbaar, of gedurfd gekruid, aangevuld met een hete saus….Steeds opwindend, met zorg bereid en met dampende verve opgediend.

With their debut album Cooking Time, the band Oluma brings a mixing-melting pot of West African grooves with jazz, pop and funk.

In 2021 Oluma was founded in Berlin by bassist Gregor Nicolai, drummer/percussionist André van der Heide and alto saxophonist/flutist Roman Polatsky. All three composed instrumental pieces for their album Cooking Time. The band has been further expanded with musicians on baritone sax, trumpet, trombone, guitar and keyboards.

The compositions dance on the edge of pop, jazz and funk with characteristics of Afro-beat from Nigeria, such as the excellent (unison) played brass section, where the baritone sax and the use of only a few (sometimes only one) chords stand out. Also striking are the razor-sharp and organically played drum/percussion that, together with the bass, forms a tight and grooving basis. This is extremely suitable for the balanced brass, that sometimes curl through the music like a braid (as in Hasty Train, with funky guitar and lovely organ), which makes the theme a true sensation.

The album is full of agile solos on, among others, trumpet, Fender Rhodes piano (with fine distortion) or trombone. These solos often lean towards modal jazz and give the music a worldly character.

With Cooking Time Oluma delivers a delicious menu. Sometimes spicy, varied, or easily digestible, sometimes nicely seasoned, supplemented with a hot sauce… Always exciting and carefully prepared and served with steaming verve. Excellent!
