Het Noorse blazersensemble tenThing breekt een lans voor vrouwelijke componisten in niewe gearrangeerde stukken.

Het Noorse koperblazersensemble tenThing werd zo’n 17 jaar geleden opgericht door trompettiste Tine Thing Helseth. Al jaren wilde ze een album opnemen met muziek gecomponeerd door vrouwen. De muziek van Grażyna Bacewicz, Lili Boulanger, Florence Price, Fanny Mendelssohn, Cécile Chaminade, Sally Beamish, Agathe Backer Grøndahl, Maria Theresia von Paradis, Clara Schumann, Joy Webb, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Mélanie Bonis en Ethel Smyth prijkt nu op de CD She Composes Like A Man.

De muziek beweegt zich tussen het tijdperk van begin 19de eeuw tot eigentijds: van Fanny Mendelssohn (haar muziek werd pas na haar dood uitgebracht door broer Felix) en Clara Schumann, tot aan het zeer ritmische openingsstuk Oberek No.1 van de geweldige Poolse componiste Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969). Een oorspronkelijk voor piano en viool geschreven werk dat hier kostelijk is gearrangeerd voor koperblazers door Jarle Storløkken. Een Noorse gitarist, componist, arrangeur en dirigent die bijna alle stukken op She Composes Like A Man arrangeerde.

Met groot vakmanschap heeft Storløkken de muziek onder het koperblazers-vergrootglas gelegd. Het resultaat is zeer coherente en solide klinkende muziek. De verschillende partijen grijpen als een puzzel in elkaar, soms als in kleurrijk labyrint, dan weer homogeen en fraai gemêleerd. Schitterend en met verve uitgevoerd door het tenThing ensemble.

tenThing straalt in de 3 Morceaux van Backer Grøndahl en het Anthem-like Share my Yoke van Webb. Het laat een indrukwekkende intimiteit horen in het impressionistische (en zelfs Nino Rota-achtige) Deux Morceaux van Boulanger en schittert in de Psalm-kleuren van het Rondeau van Chaminade. En dan klinkt het ensemble opeens weer springerig-energiek in de tempo-verdubbelingen & halveringen (per partij) in Rissolty Rossolty van Seeger en horen we de tuba-partij in Sicilienne van Von Paradis die het thema speelt. Mooie opvallende keuze.

Het tenThing zijn 10 musici die verdomd goed op elkaar zijn ingespeeld, voortreffelijk hun instrumenten beheersen en de muziek laten schitteren op hun vrouwelijke reis waar mannen nog veel van kunnen leren!

The Norwegian wind ensemble tenThing champions female composers in new arranged pieces.

The Norwegian brass ensemble tenThing was founded about 17 years ago by trumpeter Tine Thing Helseth. For years she wanted to record an album with music composed by women. The music of Grażyna Bacewicz, Lili Boulanger, Florence Price, Fanny Mendelssohn, Cécile Chaminade, Sally Beamish, Agathe Backer Grøndahl, Maria Theresia von Paradis, Clara Schumann, Joy Webb, Ruth Crawford Seeger, Mélanie Bonis and Ethel Smyth now appears on the CD She Composes Like A Man.

The music moves between the era of the early 19th century and contemporary: from Fanny Mendelssohn (whose music was only released after her death by brother Felix) and Clara Schumann, to the very rhythmic opening piece Oberek No.1 by the excellent Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz (1909-1969). A work originally written for piano and violin, here beautifully arranged for brass instruments by Jarle Storløkken. A Norwegian guitarist, composer, arranger and conductor who arranged almost all the pieces on She Composes Like A Man.

With great craftsmanship, Storløkken has placed the music under his brass magnifying glass. The result is very coherent and solid sounding music. The different instruments fit together like a puzzle, sometimes as a colorful labyrinth, or lare homogeneous and beautifully mixed. The tenThing ensemble performs the music energetic and with verve.

tenThing shines in the 3 Morceaux by Backer Grøndahl and the Anthem-like Share my Yoke by Webb. It shows an impressive intimacy in Boulanger’s impressionistic (and even Nino Rota-esque) Deux Morceaux and sparkles in the lovely Psalm colors of Chaminade’s Rondeau. And then suddenly the ensemble sounds bouncy-energetic again in the tempo doubling & halving (per part) in Seeger’s Rissolty Rossolty and we hear the tuba part in Von Paradis‘ Sicilienne playing the theme. Nice striking choice.

The tenThing ensemble are 10 musicians who are sowell attuned to each other, master their instruments excellently and let the music shine on their female journey from which men can learn a lot!
