Accordeonist Sara Salvérius nam samen met het SunSunSun strijkkwartet het stuwende album Pendulum op.

De Vlaamse accordeoniste Sara Salvérius componeerde voor haar nieuwe album Pendulum 12 stukken voor accordeon en strijkkwartet. Salvérius is een begenadigd accordeoniste die al enkele solo-albums opnam. Haar accordeon herbergt een heel orkest, waarmee ze prachtig gebruik maakt van warme thema’s, ferme ritmiek en uitgekiende tegen-melodieën. Nu voegt ze daar het strijkkwartet SunSunSun aan toe.

In een uitgekiend folk-metier (met hier en daar een knipoog naar Michael Nyman) verkent ze op Pendulum het klankspectrum, waarbij ze gebruik maakt van verschillende strijkers-combinaties. Fraai daarbij is de afwisseling in bezetting en daarmee de klankkleur. Bijvoorbeeld: wanneer het strijkkwartet aanvankelijk ‘solo’ speelt, dus zonder accordeon. Zodra dan de accordeon weer aan het klankspectrum wordt toegevoegd is de sensatie des te groter en verfrissender. Het omgekeerde gebeurt ook: wanneer de accordeon solo start en de strijkers later invallen. De uitvoeringen zijn organisch mooi. Salvérius is een voortreffelijk musicus die haar instrument innemend goed beheerst, zoals in het solo werk Hier en Nu, waar ze met een fraaie voordracht en frasering een schitterend thema speelt en erop varieert. Iets soortgelijks gebeurt in Red Choral waar het strijkkwartet een pulserende rol is toebedeeld. Of het verhalende stuk Aurora, waarbij de strijkers je met legato en staccato gespeelde akkoorden je even boven-de-grond laten zweven.

Haar composities zijn melodieus en helder van structuur en zouden met recht traditionals kunnen zijn. Met andere woorden: liederen die jaren geleden zijn gecomponeerd en de tand des tijds hebben doorstaan en nu instrumentaal worden uitgevoerd.

Bijzonder aan het project Pendulum is dat de vier strijkinstrumenten speciaal voor dit project door vioolbouwer Pieter Goossens zijn gebouwd uit dezelfde boom. Dit om een eenduidige klankkleur te creëren die bovendien nauwgezet moest aansluiten bij het timbre van de accordeon. Dat is gelukt, want Pendulum klinkt als een klokje!

Accordionist Sara Salvérius recorded the driving album Pendulum together with the SunSunSun string quartet.

The Flemish accordionist Sara Salvérius composed 12 pieces for accordion and string quartet for her new album Pendulum. Salvérius is a gifted accordionist who has already recorded several solo albums. Her accordion sounds like an entire orchestra, with which she makes beautiful use of warm themes, firm rhythms and sophisticated counter-melodies. Now she adds the string quartet SunSunSun.

In a sophisticated folk style (with a nod here and there to Michael Nyman), she explores the sound spectrum on Pendulum, using different string combinations. The variation in line-up and therefore the timbre is beautiful. For example, when the string quartet initially plays ‘solo’, i.e. without the accordion. As soon as the accordion is added back into the sound spectrum, the sensation is all the greater and more refreshing. The opposite also happens when the accordion starts solo and the strings join in later. The performances are organically beautiful. Salvérius is an excellent musician who masters her instrument endearingly well, as in the solo piece Hier en Nu (Here and Now), where she plays a beautiful theme and varies on it with beautiful phrasing. Something similar happens in Red Choral where the string quartet is assigned a pulsating role. Or the narrative piece Aurora, where the string quartet let you float above the ground with chords excellent played legato and staccato.

Her compositions are melodious and clear in structure and could rightly be traditionals. In other words, like songs that were composed years ago and have stood the test of time and are now performed instrumentally.

What is special about the Pendulum project is that the four string instruments were built especially for this project by violin maker Pieter Goossens from the same tree, to create an unambiguous timbre that also had to closely match the timbre of the accordion. They succeeded very well, because Pendulum sounds like a charm!
