Het Sibil•la Ensemble werd opgericht door Kristia Michael. Een zangeres en componiste uit Cyprus waar ze aan de ARTE Muziekacademie in Nicosia studeerde. Ze vervolgde haar studie aan het Conservatorium van Den Haag en woont tegenwoordig in Nederland. Kristia Michael is altijd op zoek naar de rituele en spirituele aspecten binnen middeleeuws, traditioneel en hedendaags repertoire. Niet zelden benadert ze de stem als instrument waarbij ze uitgaat van uitgebreide vocale technieken, pure tonen en volkse timbres.

Op haar nieuwe album Viriditas gaat zij met haar Sibil•la Ensemble o.a. op zoek naar de theologische geschriften van de Duitse benedictijnse abdis Hildegard von Bingen (12de eeuw), componiste, filosofe, mysticus en visionair. Tot op de dag van vandaag spreekt haar werk tot de verbeelding. Het Sibil•la Ensemble bestaat naast zangeres en Gotisch harpsite Michael, uit zanger en snarenspeler Andrew Hopper, blokfluitiste Marguerite Maire, organetto-speler Tímea Daradics, luitist Jeremy Bass, percussionist Ivan Gianakis en Sanne van Gend op draailier.

Het resultaat is pure muziek die uiterst zorgvuldig is gearrangeerd en uitgevoerd. Verstilde en contemplatieve muziek, met een grote link naar sereniteit. Vocaal werk, zoals het openingslied O Virtus Sapientiae (H. v. Bingen) heeft een grote zeggingskracht. In deze compositie legt van Bingen een link tussen de mensheid, de natuur en het Goddelijke. In deze brillante uitvoering horen we Kristia Michael die subtiel en prachtig non-vibrato zingt over de Kracht van Wijsheid. Iets soortgelijks horen we ook in Rosa das Rosas, waarin Michael met haar stem de natuurlijke schoonheid accentueert, bijgestaan door een blokfluit-tegen-melodie in het tweede couplet en meerstemmige zang in het derde. Gevolgd door het verstilde El Misteri d’Elx – O Arbre Sanct, een ode aan de Heilige boom. Vocale stukken worden afgewisseld met instrumentaal werk door musici die niet alleen voortreffelijk hun instrument beheersen maar deze ook fraai kleuren binnen de arrangementen. Bijzonder is het instrumentale en verhalende O nobilissima viriditas, een duo-werk voor blokfluit en percussie. In Percussion Improvisation horen we naast bloemrijke daf-spel (frame-drum), de khoömei, de boventoonzang dat zorgt voor een buitengewoon muzikaal uitstapje.

Viriditas is de debuut-CD van het Sibil•la Ensemble. Een album dat niet alleen muzikaal, maar ook audio-technisch voortreffelijk klinkt.

The Sibil•la Ensemble excellently performs compositions from the 12th and 13th centuries from Germany, Spain, France and Cyprus.

The Sibil•la Ensemble was founded by Kristia Michael. A singer and composer from Cyprus where she studied at the ARTE Music Academy in Nicosia. She continued her studies at the Conservatory of The Hague and currently lives in the Netherlands. Kristia Michael is always looking for the ritual and spiritual aspects within medieval, traditional and contemporary repertoire. She often approaches the voice as an instrument, using extensive vocal techniques, pure tones and folk timbres.

On her new album Viriditas, she and her Sibil•la Ensemble look for, among other things, the theological writings of the German Benedictine abbess Hildegard von Bingen (12th century). A composer, philosopher, mystic and visionary whose work still appeals to the imagination today. In addition to singer and Gothic harp player Michael, the Sibil•la Ensemble consists of singer and string player Andrew Hopper, recorder player Marguerite Maire, organetto player Tímea Daradics, lutenist Jeremy Bass, percussionist Ivan Gianakis and Sanne van Gend on hurdy-gurdy.

The result is pure music that has been arranged and performed with the utmost care. Tranquil and contemplative music, with a strong link to serenity. Vocal work, such as the opening song O Virtus Sapientiae (H. v. Bingen) has great expressiveness. In this composition van Bingen creates a link between humanity, nature and the Divine. In this brilliant performance we hear Kristia Michael who sings subtly and beautifully non-vibrato about the Power of Wisdom. We also hear something similar in Rosa das Rosas, in which Michael accentuates the natural beauty with her voice, assisted by a recorder-counter-melody in the second verse and polyphonic singing in the third. Followed by the tranquil El Misteri d’Elx – O Arbre Sanct, an ode to the Sacred Tree. Vocal pieces alternate with instrumental work by musicians who not only master their instrument excellently, but also beautifully color it within the arrangements. Special is the instrumental and narrative composition O nobilissima viriditas, a duo work for recorder and percussion. In Percussion Improvisation, in addition to flowery daf playing (frame drum), we hear the khoömei, the overtone singing that provides an extraordinary musical side step.

Viriditas is the debut CD of the Sibil•la Ensemble. An album that not only sounds excellent musically, but also audio-technically.
