Marc van Vugt is een gitarist die het muzikaal spectrum breed inzet. Met zo’n 9 gitaren, percussie en een harp zither horen we hem in jazz-georiënteerd repertoire dat wordt aangevuld met pop, Zuid-Amerikaanse, wereldmuziek, klassiek en geïmproviseerde muziek.

Zijn composities klinken verzorgd met onverwachte wendingen, waar solistische fragmenten fraai worden afgewisseld met akkoorden en arpeggio’s. Veelal solo gitaarspel maar ook in eigen duo-spel, zoals in Black Belt waar de muziek zelfs verwijzingen heeft naar het album Twin House (1977) van Larry Coryell en Philip Catherine of het stuk Dancing in the Wind, met een glooiend country-touché. Van Vugt kleurt zijn muziek sierlijk zoals in Memories met een zweem Bossa Nova en maakt in het werk De man zonder hoed zelfs een knipoog naar de flamenco.

Maar wat nog het meest opvalt is zijn gevoel voor melodie. Thema’s blijven de kern van zijn muziek, al liggen ze soms verscholen in weelderig spel. Spitsvondig, melancholisch, hoekig en soms curieuze thema’s, door het gebruik van unisono-in-octaven, het gebruik secunde’s (Eight Houres of Sleep) of gewoon onverwachte en avontuurlijke notenkeuze. Snel wisselende fragmenten maken de muziek boeiend en zorgen ervoor dat de composities interessant blijven, ook na meerdere luisterbeurten.

The guitarist Marc van Vugt tells passionate twelve guitar stories on his album The Curious Badger Guitar – Tales II.

Marc van Vugt is a guitar player who uses a broad musical spectrum. With about 9 guitars, percussion and a harp Zither we hear him in jazz-oriented repertoire that is supplemented with pop, South American, world music, classical and improvised music.

His compositions sound neat with unexpected twists, where solo fragments are beautifully alternated with chords and arpeggios. Mostly solo guitar playing, but also in his own duo playing, such as in Black Belt where the music even has a reference to the album Twin House (1977) by Larry Coryell and Philip Catherine or the piece Dancing in the Wind, with a rolling country touche. Van Vugt gracefully colors his music, as in Memories, with a hint of Bossa Nova and even makes a nod to flamenco in the work De man zonder hoed (The Man Without a Hat).

But what is most striking is his sense of melody. Themes remain the core of his music, although they are sometimes hidden in lush playing. Quirky, melancholic, angular and sometimes curious themes, through the use of unison in octaves, the use of seconds (Eight Hours of Sleep) or simply unexpected and adventurous choice of notes. Rapidly changing fragments make the music fascinating and ensure that the compositions remain interesting, even after several listens.
