Het Amsterdams kwartet Cacha Mundinho rond zangeres en gitariste Joana Almeida, brengt het overtuigende debuut Vento do Mar.

De Portugese zangeres en gitariste Joana Almeida ontmoette de Nederlands/Turkse percussionist Sjahin During tijdens een festival in Oezbekistan. Toen ze later naar Amsterdam verhuisde, richtte ze met During Cacha Mundinho (Vang de kleine Wereld) op. Een cross-over kwartet dat werd aangevuld met Maripepa Contreras die (alt)hobo en duduk (Armeens dubbelriet-instrument) speelt en contrabassist Pedro Ivo Ferreira.

Het resultaat is nu te horen op het hartverwarmende album Vento do Mar. Een CD vol fraaie composities die balanceren op de scheidslijn van muziek uit Portugal, het Midden Oosten, Afrika, Brazilië en India. De arrangementen klinken soepel en helder. Almeida heeft een sympathieke en lumineuze stem die voortdurend tegen de fado aanleunt. Niet zo vreemd, want in geboorteland Portugal was zij actief binnen de fado-scene. Opvallend is het percussiewerk van During, die met Arabische en Afrikaanse percussie een weelderig palet laat horen dat strak en met verve wordt ondersteund door het baswerk van Fereira. De blaaspartijen van Contreras bewegen zich sierlijk door en over de melodie. Zowel de begeleiding (2de stem), als de soli zijn van grote klasse en geven het album een heel eigen kleur, waarbij de improvisaties excelleren in fraai gekozen thematiek.

Vento de Mar is een gevarieerd album en werkelijk een prachtig debuut van de jonge zangeres en componiste Joana Almeida die in Nederland vrijwel onbekend is. Maar daar zal spoedig verandering in komen.

The Amsterdam quartet Cacha Mundinho around singer and guitarist Joana Almeida presents the convincing debut Vento do Mar.

The Portuguese singer and guitarist Joana Almeida met the Dutch/Turkish percussionist Sjahin During during a festival in Uzbekistan. When she later moved to Amsterdam, she founded with During Cacha Mundinho (Catch the Small World). A crossover quartet that was supplemented with Maripepa Contreras who plays (alto) oboe and duduk (Armenian double reed instrument) and double bassist player Pedro Ivo Ferreira.

The result can now be heard on the heartwarming album Vento do Mar. A CD full of beautiful compositions that balance on the dividing line of music from Portugal, the Middle East, Africa, Brazil and India. The arrangements sound smooth and clear. Almeida has a sympathetic and bright voice that constantly leans towards fado. Not surprising, because in her native Portugal she was active in the fado scene. Striking is the percussion of During, who shows a lush palette with Arabic and African percussion that is supported tightly and with verve by the bass work of Fereira. Maripepa Contreras‘ hobo and duduk move gracefully through and over the melody. Both the accompaniment parts (2nd voice) and lovely solos that excell with beautifully chosen phrases. These are of great class and give the album its own unique color.

Vento de Mar is a varied album and a truly beautiful debut by the young singer and composer Joana Almeida, who is virtually unknown in the Netherlands. But that will soon change.
