Griekse vocale betovering vind je terug op het nieuwe album Aura van zangeres Katerina Papadopoulou.

De Griekse zangeres Katerina Papadopoulou is een meesteres in het uitvoeren van Grieks traditioneel repertoire. Met groot gemak zingt zij de kleine, authentieke versieringen en intonaties die zo kenmerkend zijn voor de Griekse muziek. Ze wordt op Aura bijgestaan door het trio Aegean Arc bestaande uit: qanunspeler Stefanos Dorbarakis, lyraspeler Giorgos Kontogiannis en ûd-speler Kyriakos Tapakis, met gastmuzikant Chariton Charitonidis op doedelzak.

Ze zingt repertoire uit de Aegean Zee, het gebied tussen Griekenland en Turkije. Liederen uit de Karpaten, Peloponnesos en o.a. de eilanden Rhodes, Naxos, Ikaria, Leros die handelen over de liefde, het voorbij gaan der jaren, het zeeleven, het geheim van de nacht, om af te sluiten met een lied uit de Byzantijnse periode (400-1400) over een soldaat die een gevechtspauze wil.

Haar stem is warm en helder en wordt bevlogen begeleid door Aegean Arc. Werkelijk schitterend zijn de ballades Kalymnos Distichs, Bracera, What saddens you, black crow en Partridge’s boast waarin een ongekend mooie vocale breekbaarheid te horen is, subtiel begeleid en aangevuld met qanun-, ûd- en lyra-solo’s. Maar ook het ferme Kostantis and the Crab (met doedelzak) en The Sail of the damsel behouden, ondanks de stevige ritmiek, een zekere rust. Bijzonder zijn ook de vocalen in Farewell, waarin we Papadoupoulos twee-stemmig horen zingen in een lied over het Vaarwel-zeggen tegen geliefden…

Aura is een Griekse oase van secuur uitgekozen repertoire, vakkundig gearrangeerd, bevlogen uitgevoerd en met liefde en hartstocht gezongen.

Greek vocal enchantment can be found on the new album Aura by singer Katerina Papadopoulou.

Greek singer Katerina Papadopoulou is a master of performing Greek traditional repertoire. She sings with great ease the small, authentic ornaments and intonations that are so characteristic of Greek music. She is assisted on Aura by the trio Aegean Arc consisting of: qanun player Stefanos Dorbarakis, lyra player Giorgos Kontogiannis and ûd player Kyriakos Tapakis, with guest musician Chariton Charitonidis on bagpipes.

She sings repertoire from the Aegean Sea, the area between Greece and Turkey. Songs from the Carpathians, Peloponnese and, among others, the islands of Rhodes, Naxos, Ikaria, Leros that deal with love, the passing of the years, sea life, the secret of the night, concluding with a song from the Byzantine period ( 400-1400) about a soldier who wants a break from fighting.

Her voice is warm and clear and is passionately accompanied by Aegean Arc. The ballads Kalymnos Distichs, Bracera, What saddens you, black crow and Partridge’s boast are excellent, in which an unprecedentedly beautiful vocal fragility can be heard, subtly accompanied and supplemented with qanun, ûd and lyra solos. But also the firm Kostantis and the Crab (with bagpipes) and The Sail of the damsel retain a certain tranquility, despite the strong rhythm. The vocals in Farewell are also special in which we hear Papadoupoulos singing in two voices in a song about saying goodbye to loved ones…

Aura is a Greek oasis of carefully selected repertoire, expertly arranged, passionately performed and sung with love and passion.
