Aziza Brahim is al jaren de stem van Westelijke Sahara. Een land ten zuiden van Marokko waar al bijna een halve eeuw Marokkaanse onderdrukking heerst. Ze werd geboren in een Algerijns vluchtelingenkamp, studeerde in Cuba en woont tegenwoordig in Barcelona (Spanje).

Haar muziek is krachtig en sinds haar tienerjaren een grote steun en redding voor deze 47-jarige zangeres. Haar vijfde album Mawja staat vol bevlogen werk met sobere begeleidingen op gitaar (soms met een heerlijk lichte vervorming), bas en markante Afrikaanse percussie. Transparant gearrangeerde stukken met zeer fraaie vocalen die zich bewegen over enkele akkoorden, soms zelfs over maar één kort ritmisch fragment, waardoor er innemende en bezwerende muziek ontstaat. Maar ook folk-elementen klinken er, zoals in Duaa en Malinese kleuren, zoals in Marhabna. Heel bijzonder is de 5-tels-maat in Ljaima likbira, die halverwege het lied verandert van 3+2 naar 2+3. Exceptioneel voor Afrikaanse muziek en daarom zo bijzonder! Aziza zingt alle stukken met een warm en soepel evenwicht en natuurlijke souplesse, begeleidt door slechts enkele musici die haar naadloos volgen.

Het album sluit af met Fuadi, de mooiste compositie van het album Mawja. Een buitengewoon lied dat zich beweegt over één akkoord, met een rijke melodie (en een Oriëntaals B-gedeelte), een behoorlijke omvang en zó fraai gezongen. In dit lied voel je de zinderende woestijnhitte, het zweet druppelen in je nek en het zand knarsen tussen je tanden in een meesterlijke melodie, schitterend uitgevoerd!

Singer Aziza Brahim has been the inspired voice of Western Sahara for years, including on her new album Mawja.

For years Aziza Brahim is the voice of Western Sahara. A country south of Morocco where Moroccan oppression has existed for almost half a century. She was born in an Algerian refugee camp, studied in Cuba and currently lives in Barcelona (Spain).

Her music is powerful and has been a great support and salvation for this 47-year-old singer since her teenage years. Her fifth album Mawja is full of inspired music with sober accompaniments on guitar (sometimes with a wonderfully light distortion), bass and striking African percussion. Transparently arranged pieces with very beautiful vocals that sometimes move over a single chord, sometimes even over one short rhythmic fragment, creating captivating and enchanting music. But there are also folk elements, such as in Duaa and Malian colors such as in Marhabna. Very exciting is the 5-beat bar in Ljaima likbira, which changes from 3+2 to 2+3 halfway through the song. Exceptional for African music and therefore so special! Aziza sings all pieces with a warm and supple balance and natural flexibility, accompanied by only a few musicians who follow her seamlessly.

The album closes with Fuadi, the most beautiful composition of the album Mawja. An extraordinary song that moves over just one chord, with a rich melody (and an Oriental B-part), from high voice to low and so beautifully sung. In this song you feel the blistering desert heat, the sweat dripping down your neck and the sand crunching between your teeth in a masterful melody, beautifully performed!
