Ruim vijf jaar geleden startte de Finse zangeres Teea Aarnio een samenwerking met in Amerika wonende producer en muzikant Jukka Backlund. Een samenwerking die uitgroeide tot de divers en authentiek klinkende CD Väki. Met Backlund schreef ze de meeste stukken op haar eigen teksten/gedichten.

Väki is een album met pop-, jazz- en Scandinavische folk-invloeden die zó met elkaar zijn verbonden, dat er een organisch patchwork is ontstaan waarin stijlen over-en-door-elkaar zijn verweven met on top de sprankelende vocalen van Teea Aarnio. Dat is knap werk en levert bijzondere muziek op.

Ze zingt in het Fins, Noord-Samisch en Zweeds over de natuur, over de innerlijke natuurkracht van de mens en haar als persoon. Ze wordt begeleid op piano (prachtig in Löyly), synthesizer, viool, mandoline, sax (strakke solo in Löyly en in de Interlude Kesä), accordeon, (bas)gitaar, drums/percussie, keel-zang en de kantele (schitterend in Kevät). Het prachtig Finse volksinstrument dat we ook in de Baltische Staten tegenkomen, maar dan in de variaties van kokle en kankles.

De stukken hebben goed in het gehoor liggende melodieën en klinken opmerkelijk fris en helder, met hier en daar fraaie harmonische achtergrond-vocalen. De liedjes zijn verbonden met korte interludes. Een soort soundscapes die met gebruik van synthesizers, kantele, percussie en gitaar een organische overgang vormen tussen de nummers. Hierdoor klinkt Väki als eigenlijk één grote track waarin het werk van een bevlogen zangeres te horen is, die met haar debuut-album meteen hoge ogen gooit!

Väki is the title of the compelling debut album by Finnish singer Teea Aarnio.

More than five years ago, Finnish singer Teea Aarnio started a collaboration with American-based producer and musician Jukka Backlund. A collaboration that grew into the diverse and authentic-sounding CD Väki. With Backlund she wrote most of the pieces based on her own texts/poems.

Väki is an album with pop, jazz and Scandinavian folk influences that are connected in such a way that an organic patchwork has been created in which styles are interwoven with the sparkling vocals of Teea Aarnio on top. That is great work and produces special music.

Teea Aarnio sings in Finnish, Northern Sami and Swedish about nature, about the inner natural power of man and her as a person. She is accompanied on piano (beautiful in Löyly), synthesizer, violin, mandolin, sax (tight solo in Löyly and in the Interlude Kesä), accordion, (bass) guitar, drums/percussion, throat singing and the kantele (wonderful in Kevät), the beautiful Finnish folk instrument that we encounter also in the Baltic States in the variations of kokle and kankles.

The pieces have catchy melodies and sound remarkably fresh and clear, with beautiful harmonic background vocals here and there. The songs are connected with short interludes. A kind of soundscapes that form an organic transition between the songs by the use of synthesizers, kantele, percussion and guitar. This makes Väki actually sound like óne big track, featuring the work of an enthusiastic singer who immediately achieved (artistic) fame with her debut album!
