De muziek van pianist Lafayette Gilchrist heeft de compositorische spontaniteit van Charles Mingus, de timing van Thelonious Monk aangevuld met een saus van funk, hiphop en rhythm & blues.

Lafayette Gilchrist (1967) is een Amerikaanse pianist. Hij werd geboren in de hoofdstad Washingtion DC. Alhoewel hij economie gaat studeren, is het de piano (op de universiteit) die hem meer interesseert en meer aandacht krijgt. Hij luisterde veel naar soul en funk: naar de muziek van Stevie Wonder en gitarist/zanger Chuck Brown. Deze laatste oefende in de buurt van het huis van zijn tante en is de pionier van de Go-go muziek. Een mengvorm van funk, rhythm & blues en jazz. Gilchrist is autodidact en begint al vroeg met componeren. Vanaf 2000 toert hij met saxofonist David Murray en start later zijn octet-band The New Volcanoes en zijn trio Inside Out met bassist Michael Formanek en drummer Eric Kennedy (deze laatste is ook te horen op Undaunted). Naast Gilchrist op piano horen we tenorsaxofonist Brian Settles, trombonist Christian Hizon, bassist Herman Burney, drummer Eric Kennedy en percussionist Kevin Pinder.

Het album Undaunted (Onverschrokken) zit vol muzikale heerlijkheden. Zo is de compositie Into the Swirl een aaneenschakeling van fraai geharmoniseerde blazers die het opnemen tegen een stuwende en dwingende bas-riff, gespeeld door de contrabas en de linkerhand van de piano, overgoten met heerlijk excessief drum- en percussiewerk. Iets soortgelijks horen we in het daaropvolgende Southern Bell, waar blazers-riffs worden ondersteund door complementair piano- en basspel. Een strakke thematiek waarna solo’s volgen op bas, drums en piano. Bijzonder is ook het titelstuk Undaunted, dat opent met een gestreken bas, waarna de piano, de bas en de blazers het thema spelen. Een speelse opbouw die erg goed en opwindend werkt. Niet alleen omdat het thema zo organisch is opgebouwd maar ook zo lekker in het gehoor ligt. Het album sluit af met Metropolitan Musings dat een heldere opbouw heeft zoals we die ook tegenkwamen bij de stukken van pianist Chris McGregor (1936-1990) en zijn Brotherhood of Breath, waar muzikale fragmenten elkaar aanvullen als een complementaire muzikale puzzel.

De stukken op Undaunted klinken spontaan, dynamisch en levendig. Dat komt enerzijds door de composities zelf, door de structuur, de thematiek en de improvisatie-vrijheid van de musici. Maar anderzijds ook door het spelplezier en het gemak waarmee de muziek wordt gespeeld. Inspirerend om naar te luisteren en doorlopend van te genieten.

The music of pianist Lafayette Gilchris has the compositional spontaneity of Charles Mingus, the timing of Thelonious Monk, supplemented with a sauce of funk, hip-hop and rhythm & blues.

Lafayette Gilchrist (1967) is an American pianist. He was born in the capital Washington DC. Although he studied economics, it is the piano (at the university) that interests him more and receives more attention. He listened a lot to soul and funk: the music of Stevie Wonder and guitarist/singer Chuck Brown. The latter practiced near his aunt’s house and is the pioneer of Go-go music. A mixture of funk, rhythm & blues and jazz. Gilchrist is self-taught and started composing at an early age. From 2000 he toured with saxophonist David Murray and later started his octet band The New Volcanoes and his trio Inside Out with bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Eric Kennedy (the latter can also be heard on Undaunted). In addition to Gilchrist on piano, we hear tenor saxophonist Brian Settles, trombonist Christian Hizon, bassist Herman Burney, drummer Eric Kennedy and percussionist Kevin Pinder.

The album Undaunted is full of musical delights. The compositions Into the Swirl, for example, are a series of beautifully harmonized wind instruments that compete against a driving and compelling bass riff, played by the double bass and the left hand of the piano, topped with wonderfully excessive drum and percussion work. We hear something similar in the subsequent Southern Bell, where brass riffs are supported by complementary piano and bass playing. A tight theme followed by solos on bass, drums and piano. The title piece Undaunted is also a special one, which opens with a bowed bass, after which the piano, bass and wind section play the theme. A playful structure that works very well and exciting. A lovely theme which is constructed so organically, that makes it so easy to listen to. The album concludes with Metropolitan Musings, which has a clear structure as we also encountered in the pieces by pianist Chris McGregor (1936-1990) and his Brotherhood of Breath, where musical fragments complement each other like a complementary musical puzzle.

The pieces on Undaunted sound spontaneous, dynamic and lively. This is partly due to the compositions themselves, the structure, the theme and the freedom of improvisation of the musicians. But on the other hand, also because of the fun of playing and the ease with which these musicians make music. Inspiring to listen to and continuously enjoy.
