Dimitris Mystakidis startte meer dan 30 jaar geleden met het spelen en bestuderen van klassieke en Griekse rebetika muziek. Een stijl die eind 19de eeuw zeer populair was in Griekenland. Het was de muziek van het volk en stond aan de wieg van de ontwikkeling van veel Griekse muziekstijlen. Zo ook bij de muziek van Dimitris Mystakidis, wiens composities doordrenkt zijn van rebetika. Al geeft hij er een eigen draai aan door het gebruik van (elektrische) gitaar, percussie (drums) aangevuld met Griekse instrumenten zoals de baglama, bouzouki, karamuza, tzouras en davul.

De liederen op zijn nieuwe, negende album Morso zijn van zijn hand, in samenwerking met Alexandros Emmanuilidis. Zijn akoestisch gitaarspel staat centraal, net zoals zijn innemende, warme stem. Hij is een troubadour en zingt over thema’s die hem bezighouden zoals huiselijk geweld, (vrouwen)discriminatie, racisme en uitsluiting. De melodieën hebben een hoog melodieus karakter en zouden met recht traditionals kunnen zijn. Fraai is de bijdrage van zangeres Eleni Vitali in Moirasma (Delen), waarin ze krachtig wordt begeleid op tzouras, klarinet, guitar en percussie. Bijzonder is ook de accordeon in Monologos Theou, gespeeld door Iraklis Vavatsikas die hiermee de muziek een speciaal touché bezorgt. Om dit soort liederen te kunnen componeren en arrangeren, moet je de Griekse muziek-ziel in je dragen en deze muzikaal vertalen. En dat is precies wat er op Morso gebeurd en bijzonder schitterende muziek oplevert.

Greek singer and guitarist Dimitris Mystakidis released his personal album Morso.

Dimitris Mystakidis started playing and studying classical and Greek rebetika music more than 30 years ago. A style that was very popular in Greece at the end of the 19th century. It was the music of the people and was at the origin of the development of many Greek musical styles. This also applies to the music of Dimitris Mystakidis, whose compositions are steeped in rebetika. Although he gives it his own twist by using (electric) guitar, percussion (drums) supplemented with Greek instruments such as the baglama, bouzouki, karamuza, tzouras and davul.

The songs on his new, ninth album Morso are his own compositions, in collaboration with Alexandros Emmanuilidis. His acoustic guitar playing is central, just like his endearing, warm voice. He is a troubadour and sings about themes that concern him such as domestic violence, (female) discrimination, racism and exclusion. The melodies have a highly melodic character and could rightly be traditionals. The contribution of singer Eleni Vitali in Moirasma (Share) is beautiful, in which she is powerfully accompanied on tzouras, clarinet, guitar and percussion. The accordion in Monologos Theou, played by Iraklis Vavatsikas, gives the music a special touch. To compose and arrange these types of songs, you must carry the Greek music soul within you and be able to translate it musically. And that is exactly what happens on this wonderful album Morso and produces exceptionally and beautiful music.
