Het Classica Orchestra Afrobeat brengt met Circles een overweldigende cross-over-melange van klassieke muziek, afrobeat en jazz.

Het Classica Orchestra Afrobeat is een 14-koppig orkest uit Italië, onder leiding van Marco Zanotti (Faenza 1976). Een percussionist, een componist, producer en performer die altijd op zoek is naar nieuwe muzikale wegen. Op zoek naar onverwachte en innovatieve cross-overs. Zo ook op zijn nieuwe, vierde album Circles. Ook hier zoekt hij naar de perfecte blend tussen klassieke muziek, jazz, improvisatie en afrobeat. En dat is verdomd goed gelukt! Bijvoorbeeld de afrobeat komt mooi tot uiting in het openingsnummer L’Origine del Mondo, waar een duimpiano-intro wordt overgoten door poly-ritmisch (2 tegen 3) percussie-spel, aangevuld met strijkers en blazers.

De composities op Circles zijn overwegend nieuw werk. Gecomponeerd door Zanotti, leden van het Classica Orchestra Afrobeat en een enkele traditional. De uitwerkingen en de arrangementen van de stukken zijn werkelijk van grote klasse. Veel composities hebben een herhalend karakter, een motief, een thema dat over-en-over klinkt. Aangevuld met steeds een andere combinatie van instrumenten, waaronder de gumbri, bas, klavecimbel, duimpiano, viool, blazers en veel percussie, in wisselende volgorde. Deze afwisseling werkt magisch, bijna meditatief zoals bijvoorbeeld in Nhemamusasa. Een werkwijze die doet denken aan het Penguin Café Orchestra, waar ook de herhaling van korte melodieuze fragmenten mede zorgt voor de diepgang van de muziek. Alleen gaat het Classica Orchestra Afrobeat nog een stapje verder. Hier klinkt het West-Afrikaanse metier als een zoete wind door de arrangementen dat de muziek zijn verfijnde, bijna mystieke lading bezorgt. De uitvoeringen worden gespeeld door geschoolde musici die hun instrument goed beheersen, getuige de prachtige samenklank die soms per 8 maten wisselt. Dat vergt veel van muzikanten die ervoor moeten zorgen dat de muziek klinkt als een vol orkest en niet als 14 losse instrumenten. Circles is werkelijk een pracht-album met muziek die continueert en maar doorgaat zoals de cirkel rond is!

With the album Circles, the Classica Orchestra Afrobeat presents an overwhelming crossover blend of classical music, afrobeat and jazz.

The Classica Orchestra Afrobeat is a 14-piece orchestra from Italy, conducted by Marco Zanotti (Faenza 1976). A percussionist, a composer, producer and performer who is always looking for new musical challenges. Looking for unexpected and innovative crossovers. This also applies to his new, fourth album Circles. On this CD he finds the perfect blend between classical music, jazz, improvisation and afrobeat. And it worked out damn well! The afrobeat, for example, is beautifully expressed in the opening song L’Origine del Mondo, where a thumb piano intro is topped by poly-rhythmic (2 against 3) percussion playing, supplemented with strings and wind instruments.

The compositions on Circles are predominantly new work. Composed by Zanotti, members of the Classica Orchestra Afrobeat and a single traditional. The elaborations and arrangements of the pieces are truly of first class. Many compositions have a repetitive character, a motif, a theme that sounds over and over. Always supplemented with other combinations of instruments including the gumbri, bass, harpsichord, thumb piano, violin, wind instruments and lots of percussion, in varying order. This variety has a magical, almost meditative effect, as in Nhemamusasa, for example. A way of composing and arranging that is reminiscent of the Penguin Café Orchestra, where the repetition of short melodic fragments also contributes to the depth of the music. However, the Classica Orchestra Afrobeat goes one step further. Here the West African metier sounds like a sweet wind through the arrangements, giving the music its refined, almost mystical coloring. The performances are played by trained musicians who master their instrument very well, as evidenced by the beautiful harmony that sometimes changes every 8 bars. That demands a lot from musicians who have to ensure that the music sounds like a full orchestra and not like 14 separate instruments. Circles is truly a beautiful album, a masterpiece with music that goes on and on, as a circle which has no end!
