De Bretons folk is een krachtige stijl die zich door de jaren heen breed heeft ontwikkeld. Met zangers als Yann‐Fañch Kemener en Erik Marchand en de groepen Malicorne, Tri Yann en natuurlijk Alan Stivell (met gitarist Dan Ar Braz) ontwikkelde de muziek zich met een breed scala aan folk-rock, met veel pop- en wereldmuziek-invloeden. Zo nam zanger Marchand een legendarische CD op met de groep Taraf de Caransebes uit de Balkan en nam de groep Manau in 1998 het album Panique Celtique op in een mix van Bretonse folk met hiphop. Nu komt het fantastische trio O’Tridal met hun inspirerende Triumviraat waarop Bretonse folk wordt gemixed met pop, rock en zelfs met de muziek van de Noord Afrikaanse touareg nomaden uit Algerije.

O’Tridal werd opgericht in 2019 en bestaat uit fluitist en duduk-speler Yeltaz Guenneau, percussionist Kentin Juillard en gitarist Thibault Niobé. Triumviraat is hun 2de album. Een sterk staaltje Bretonse folk dat wordt gelardeerd met fuzzy gitaarsounds, stevig percussie & drum-werk, strak en soepel fluitspel en schitterende kleuren van de duduk (in Azizilé), het Armeense dubbelriet-instrument met zijn intens-warme en melancholieke timbre.

De instrumentale muziek van O’Tridal zit vol energie. Met gitaar, fluit/duduk en percussie is O’Tridal in staat uitgebalanceerde muziek te spelen die als een muzikale trein door een rijk geïllustreerd landschap dendert. Arrangementen vol tempo- en volumewisselingen klinken als een geoliede machine. De stukken hebben een duidelijke couplet/refrein/intermezzo-opbouw, die geleend is uit de vocale muziek. De peilers van de folk-traditie, aangevuld met improvisatie.

Prachtig is bijvoorbeeld hoe het plooibare fluitspel van Guenneau zich beweeglijk krult om het strakke drumwerk van Juillard, waar gitarist Niobé het geheel kleurt met vervormd gitaarwerk en lichte wah-wah-sounds. En daarbij te bedenken dat de muziek onmiskenbaar Bretons blijft. Knap werk! Instrumentale stukken dus, die door de drie heren zijn geschreven en uitgewerkt en worden gebracht vol vreugde en levendig spelplezier. Wat een sensatie moet het zijn om dit trio een keer live mee te maken!

Trio O’Tridal from Brittany gives Breton folk an innovative, innovative & original boost.

Breton folk is a powerful style that has developed widely over the years. With singers such as Yann‐Fañch Kemener and Erik Marchand and the groups Malicorne, Tri Yann and of course Alan Stivell (with guitarist Dan Ar Braz), the music developed with a wide range of folk-rock, with many pop and world music influences. For example, singer Marchand recorded a legendary CD with the group Taraf de Caransebes from the Balkans and in 1998 the group Manau recorded Panique Celtique in a mix of Breton folk with hip hop. Now the fantastic trio O’Tridal comes with their inspiring Triumviraat in which Breton folk is mixed with pop, rock and even with the music of the North African touareg nomads from Algeria.

O’Tridal was founded in 2019 and consists of flautist and duduk player Yeltaz Guenneau, percussionist Kentin Juillard and guitarist Thibault Niobé. Triumviraat is their 2nd album. A strong example of Breton folk that is interspersed with fuzzy guitar sounds, solid percussion & drum work, tight and smooth flute playing and beautiful colors of the duduk (in Azizilé), the Armenian double reed instrument with its intensely warm and melancholic timbre.

O’Tridal’s instrumental music is full of energy. With guitar, flute/duduk and percussion, this trio is able to play balanced music that thunders through a richly illustrated landscape like a musical train. Arrangements full of tempo and volume changes sound like a well-oiled machine. The pieces have a clear verse/chorus/intermezzo structure, which is borrowed from vocal music. The pillars of the folk tradition, supplemented with fine improvisations.

Beautiful for example, is how Guenneau’s flexible flute playing curls around Juillard’s tight drumming, where guitarist Niobé colors the music with distorted guitar work and light wah-wah sounds. And the music easily remains Breton. Very well done! Instrumental pieces, written and developed by the three gentlemen, which are performed full of joy and lively playing pleasure. What a sensation it must be to experience this trio live!
