Het Busch Trio speelt met enorme expressiviteit de trio’s voor piano, viool en cello van Maurice Ravel en Dmitri Shostakovich.

Het nieuwe album van het Busch Trio bevat twee werken voor piano, viool en cello van twee totaal verschillende componisten: Maurice Ravel en Dmitri Shostakovitsch. De eerste componeerde zijn (enige) pianotrio naar het Franse model van Satie, Poulenc en Debussy. Shostakovitsch daarentegen componeerde meer naar het Duitse model van Beethoven, Mahler en Berg. Maar ondanks dit compositorische verschil, hebben beide werken een orkestrale diepgang waar versieringen, virtuoze arpeggio’s, snel wisselende tempi en volumeverschillen elkaar razendsnel afwisselen.

Beide werken werden gecomponeerd in tijden van oorlog. Ravel voltooide zijn pianotrio in 1914 in Saint-Jean-de-Luz (Baskenland/Spanje), vlak bij Ciboure, waar hij 1875 werd geboren. Na het voltooien van zijn pianotrio, wilde hij meevechten tijdens de Iste W.O. en meldde zich voor het leger. Uiteindelijk werd hij ziekenverzorger en chauffeur bij de artillerie. Ravel verwerkte de Baskische dans, de zortiko (met onregelmatige maatsoort), in het eerste deel van zijn trio en in het derde deel treffen we de Spaanse passacaglia aan. Een stijl uit de barok waar variaties over een baslijn worden gespeeld. Een compositorische wijze die we ook tegenkomen bij Bach, Biber en Jean Baptist Lully.

Het trio van Shostakovitsch werd geschreven tijdens de IIde W.O., in een tijd waar de wreedheden van de Holocaust duidelijk werden in Moskou. Shostakovitsch verhuisde uiteindelijk naar Leningrad. Ook hij maakt gebruik van de passacaglia. In het IIIde deel, het largo, horen we plechtige akkoorden die worden omspeeld door viool en cello. Het laatste deel is een ode aan de Joodse bevolking. Shostakovitsch was zelf geen Jood maar voelde de pijn van de Holocaust die hij muzikaal verbeeldt in het IVde deel met een klezmer-melodie, om tenslotte te eindigen met het passacaglia uit het IIIde deel.

Op onnavolgbare wijze speelt het Busch Trio deze twee werken. Met een muzikale vanzelfsprekendheid horen we drie voortreffelijke musici die, schijnbaar moeiteloos, door het weelderige muzikale landschap laveren. Met een uitgebalanceerde en uitgesproken articulatie geven zij de muziek de passende lading, waardoor je als luisteraar zowel het verdriet, de pijn en smart voelt, naast de agressie en het geweld van de oorlog. Ongelooflijk knap, doorleefd en vooral bijzonder treffend uitgevoerd. Ware klasse.

The Busch Trio plays the trios for piano, violin and cello by Maurice Ravel and Dmitri Shostakovich with enormous expressiveness.

The Busch Trio’s new album contains two works for piano, violin and cello by two completely different composers: Maurice Ravel and Dmitri Shostakovitsch. The former composed his (only) piano trio after the French model of Satie, Poulenc and Debussy. Shostakovitsch, on the other hand, composed more after the German model of Beethoven, Mahler and Berg. But despite this compositional difference, both works have an orchestral depth where ornaments, virtuoso arpeggios, rapidly changing tempi and volume differences.

Both works were composed during times of war. In 1914 Ravel completed his piano trio in Saint-Jean-de-Luz (Basque Country/Spain), near Ciboure, where he was born in 1875. After completing his piano trio, he wanted to fight during the First World War and signed up for the army. Eventually he became a male nurse and driver in the artillery. Ravel incorporated the Basque dance the zortiko (with irregular time signature) in the first part of his trio and in the third part we find the Spanish passacaglia. A style from the Baroque period where variations are played over a bass line. A compositional way that we also encounter by Bach, Biber and Jean Baptist Lully.

Shostakovitsch’s trio was written during the Second World War, at a time when the atrocities of the Holocaust were becoming apparent in Moscow. Shostakovitsch eventually moved to Leningrad. He also uses the passacaglia. In the IIIrd movement, the largo, we hear fine solemn chords played by violin and cello. The last part is an ode to the Jewish people. Shostakovitsch was not a Jew himself, but felt the pain of the Holocaust, which he musically depicts in the IVth movement with a klezmer melody, finally ending with the passacaglia from the IIIrd movement.

The Busch Trio plays these two works in an inimitable way. With musical naturalness, we hear three excellent musicians who navigate, seemingly effortlessly, through the lush musical landscape. With a balanced and distinct articulation they give the music the appropriate charge so that you as a listener feel the sadness, pain and sorrow, in addition to the aggression and violence of the war. Incredibly clever, lived through and, above all, very strikingly performed. True class.
