Na zo’n vijf jaar komt de band Mokoomba met een nieuw, enerverend album Tusona (Sporen in het zand).

Begin 2017 kwam het vorige album Luyando uit van de Zimbabwaanse band Mokoomba uit. Een sextet uit Victoria Falls (Oost-Zimbabwe). De CD is modern geproduceerd met vakkundige aandacht voor opname, arrangementen en mix. Er klinken prachtige meerstemmige vocalen (Kandonga) zoals we die ook al tegenkwamen bij de groepen als Insingizi en Black Umfolosi uit Zimbabwe.

Tusoni is een hecht album met pakkende composities, stuwende ritmiek en fraaie vocalen van leadzanger Mathias Muzaza en de andere vijf leden die bijzonder coherent meerstemmig zingen. Het album opent met twee stukken uit het naburige land in de Congolese rumba-stijl. In het lied Makasi gaat de groep terug naar de religieuze inwijdingsceremonie, waarbij gemaskerde mannen de geesten symboliseren van de voorouders die jonge mensen begeleiden naar hun volwassenheid. De afgelopen decennia is het animo voor deze makasi-ceremonies onder de jeugd flink gedaald. Mokoomba probeert deze teloorgang onder andere tegen te gaan met een schitterende youtube. Daarnaast speelt de groep de chemurenga. Protestmuziek die tot grote hoogte is gestegen door gitarist en zanger Thomas Mapfumo (De Leeuw van Zimbabwe). Hij nam met zijn band The Black Unlimited meer dan 20 albums op met opzwepende ritmes, maatschappijkritische teksten waarbij hij met zijn gitaarspel, het mbira-spel (duimpiano) imiteert. Iets soortgelijks is te horen in slotstuk Kumukanda, een van de drie remixes van het vorige album Luynado die nu te vinden zijn op Mokoomba’s Tusona.

After about five years, the band Mokoomba releases their new, exciting album Tusona (Tracks in the sand).

At the beginning of 2017, the previous album Luyando by the Zimbabwean band Mokoomba was released. A sextet from Victoria Falls (Eastern Zimbabwe). The new album Tusona has been produced in a modern way with expert attention to recording, arrangements and mixing. There are beautiful polyphonic vocals (Kandonga) as we encountered in bands like Insingizi and Black Umfolosi from Zimbabwe.

Tusoni is a tight album with catchy compositions, driving rhythms and beautiful vocals from lead singer Mathias Muzaza and the other five members who sing very coherently in lovely polyphony. The album opens with two pieces from the neighboring country in the Congolese rumba style. In the song Makasi, the group goes back to the religious initiation ceremony, where masked men symbolize the ancestral spirits, guiding young people into adulthood. In recent decades, the enthusiasm for these makasi ceremonies among the youth has decreased. Mokoomba tries to counteract this decline with a beautiful youtube, among other things. In addition, the group plays the chemurenga. Protest music that has risen to great heights by guitarist and singer Thomas Mapfumo (The Lion of Zimbabwe). He recorded more than 20 albums with his band The Black Unlimited with exciting rhythms, socially critical lyrics in which he imitates the mbira playing (thumb piano) with his guitar playing. Something similar can be heard in closing piece Kumukanda, one of the three remixes from the previous album Luynado that can now be found on Mokoomba’s Tusona.
