Met respect voor de jazz-traditie speelt het Lydian Sound Orchestra o.l.v. Riccardo Brazzale op hun nieuwe album No More Wrong Mistakes (This is our music) een strakke innovatieve set, met gastsaxofonist David Murray.

In 1989 werd het Lydian Sound Orchestra opgericht door componist en arrangeur Riccardo Brazzale. Het ensemble werkt vanuit de jazztraditie die wordt overgoten met een eigentijdse benadering waarbij het gebruik van harmonieën, structuren en ritmiek(verdubbeling) verder wordt uitgediept. Hierdoor wordt de muziek interessant en klinkt er een opwindende combinatie van muzikale kleuren. Het Lydian Sound Orchestra nam meer dan 20 CD’s op, gaf veel concerten in binnen- en buitenland en werkte samen met grote jazz-namen waaronder drummer Paul Motian en de saxofonisten Charles McPherson en David Murray. Deze laatste horen we ook op het album No More Wrong Mistakes (This is our music).

De muziek op No More Wrong Mistakes (This is our music) heeft kenmerken van de muziek van Duke Ellington, maar ook van Thelonious Monk, Archie Shepp en vooral Charles Mingus. Gedurfd, eigenzinnig, bevlogen, vrolijk & beweeglijk. Riccardo Brazzale componeerde en arrangeerde twaalf stukken met in elke compositie een solist in gedachte. Een werkwijze die doet denken aan Duke Ellington die ook de kleur van de solist al in gedachte had terwijl hij de stukken arrangeerde. Het Lydian Sound Orchestra bestaat uit tien musici: zes blazers, gitarist, pianist en ritmesectie van bas & drums.

Op organische en natuurlijke wijze worden de composities uitgevoerd. Hier zijn musici aan het werk die niet alleen hun instrument goed beheersen, maar ook hun instrument fraai kleuren binnen het orkest-metier. Hierdoor klinkt de band als een warme eenheid, zelfs in Dreaming of the Masters, waar een georganiseerde chaos zeer gestructureerd uitmondt in een duo-solo van trombone en contrabas. Het album opent met Ornette Coleman’s Round Trip. Een unisono gespeeld thema, gevolgd door dynamische be-bop, met walking bas en swingtiming. Low Fields Rain (met schitterend piano-intro) is een werk van bandleider Riccardo Brazzale die in een 7-tels-maat de regen schitterend naar beneden laat dwarrelen. Joseph The March, ook van Brazzale, is een langzaam werk met een prachtige choral-sound. Opvallend is ook Revival van Locandro & Murray. Een funky compositie met groovy gitaar, ferme drums en heerlijke solo’s op saxofoon, gitaar, trombone en sopraansax.

No More Wrong Mistakes (This is our music) is een eigenzinnig album van voortreffelijke musici die doen waar ze zin in hebben en doen dat verdomd goed!

With respect for the jazz tradition, the Lydian Sound Orchestra, conducted by Riccardo Brazzale, plays a tight innovative set on their new album No More Wrong Mistakes (This is our music), with guest saxophonist David Murray.

The Lydian Sound Orchestra was founded in 1989 by composer and arranger Riccardo Brazzale. The ensemble creates music from the jazz tradition, which is topped with a contemporary approach in which the use of harmonies, structures and rhythm (doubling) is further explored. This makes the music interesting, an exciting combination of musical colors sounds. The Lydian Sound Orchestra has recorded more than 20 CDs, given many concerts at home and abroad and has collaborated with major jazz names, including drummer Paul Motian and saxophonists Charles McPherson and David Murray. We also hear the latter on the album No More Wrong Mistakes (This is our music).

The music on this new album has characteristics of the music of Duke Ellington, but also of Thelonious Monk, Archie Shepp and especially Charles Mingus. Daring, quirky, passionate, cheerful & agile music. Riccardo Brazzale composed and arranged twelve pieces with a soloist in mind in each composition. A method that is reminiscent of Duke Ellington, who also had the color of the soloist in mind while arranging the music. The Lydian Sound Orchestra consists of ten musicians: six wind players, guitarist, pianist and rhythm section of bass & drums.

The compositions are performed in an organic and natural way. These excellent musicians play their instrument very well, but also color their instrument beautifully within the orchestral metier. This makes the band sound like a warm unity, even in Dreaming of the Masters, where an organized chaos leads to a very structured duo solo of trombone and double bass. The album opens with Ornette Coleman’s Round Trip. A theme played in unison, followed by dynamic be-bop, with walking bass and swing timing. Low Fields Rain (with a beautiful piano intro) is a work by bandleader Riccardo Brazzale who lets the rain swirl down beautifully in a 7-beat measure. Joseph The March, also from Brazzale, is a nice slow work with a beautiful choral sound. Revival by Locandro & Murray is also striking. A funky composition with groovy guitar, firm drums and wonderful solos on saxophone, guitar, trombone and soprano saxophone.

No More Wrong Mistakes (This is our music) is a quirky album of excellent musicians who do what they want and do it damn well!
