Je hoeft maar een nummer te horen van de Haïtiaanse zangeres Moonlight Benjamin en ze zit voorgoed verankerd in je muzikaal geheugen!

WAYO is het negende album van Moonlight Benjamin. De Haïtiaanse zangeres die opvalt door haar bevlogen, warme en diepe stem. Ze wordt begeleid met hypnotiserende grooves, pompende bas-lijnen en stevige bluesriffs met fuzzy randje.

Moonlight Benjamin (1971) wordt geboren in Port au Prince, de hoofdstad van Haïti. Haar moeder sterft bij haar geboorte en, mede hierdoor, brengt ze haar jeugd door in een weeshuis. Ze groeit op in een kerkelijke & gospelomgeving. In haar tienerjaren gaat ze op zoek naar de vodou-wortels van haar voorouders en ontmoet hierdoor veel Haïtiaanse musici. In 2002 gaat Moonlight Benjamin jazzmuziek studeren in Toulouse, waarna ze o.a. gaat samenwerken met de in Spanje wonende innovatieve Cubaanse pianist Omar Sosa.

Maar het muzikale balletje gaat pas echt rollen als ze gaat samenwerken met de gitarist Matthis Pascaud. Hij creëert een stevige gitaarsound, ingebed in een Haïtiaanse sound gebaseerd op traditionele ritmes, drums die live worden aangevuld met Haïtiaanse vodou-rituelen en ceremonies. Iets soortgelijks treffen we aan op WAYO (lett: Kreet van Pijn). Op dit album staan stukken van Pascaud en drummer Raphael Chassin op teksten van Benjamin in het Frans en Creools. Teksten over Haïti en filosofische onderwerpen. Daarnaast horen we achtergrondzangeres Nathalie Loriot.

De muziek op WAYO is doordrenkt van vodou-ritmes, (hard)rock, pop en blues in een pompend en psychedelisch enthousiasme vol energie. Heerlijke gitaar-loopjes met strakke akkoorden en stuwende ritmiek. De arrangementen zijn behoorlijk overdadig met hier en daar een rustig moment dat wordt ondersteund met een (farfisa)orgel, zoals in het einde van de het openingsstuk Wayo. Maar wat vooral opvalt zijn de vocalen van Moonlight Benjamin. Een stem met een intensieve expressiviteit, die warm en breed van kleur is. Authentiek, herkenbaar, karakteristiek en zeer bevlogen. Een musicus die op oprechte wijze de Haïtiaanse cultuur wereldkundig maakt. Geen wonder dat haar bijnaam en ere-titel de Vodou Priestess of Blues-Rock is: ere wie ere toekomt!

You only need to hear one song by the Haitian singer Moonlight Benjamin and she will be forever anchored in your musical memory!

WAYO is Moonlight Benjamin’s ninth album. The Haitian singer who stands out for her passionate, warm and deep voice. She is accompanied by hypnotic grooves, pumping bass lines and solid blues riffs with a fuzzy edge.

Moonlight Benjamin (1971) was born in Port au Prince, the capital of Haiti. Her mother dies at birth and, partly because of this, she spends her childhood in an orphanage. She grew up in a church & gospel environment. In her teens she goes in search of the vodou roots of her ancestors and meets many Haitian musicians. In 2002, Moonlight Benjamin studied jazz music in Toulouse, after which she collaborated with the innovative Cuban pianist Omar Sosa, who lives in Spain.

But her musical career really begins when she started working with guitarist Matthis Pascaud. He creates a solid guitar sound, embedded in a Haitian sound, based on traditional rhythms, drums that are live supplemented with Haitian voodoo rituals and ceremonies. We find something similar on WAYO (lit: Cry of Pain). This album features pieces by Pascaud and drummer Raphael Chassin on lyrics by Benjamin in French and Creole. Texts about Haiti life and philosophical subjects. We also hear background vocalist Nathalie Loriot.

The music on WAYO is steeped in vodou rhythms, (hard) rock, pop and blues in a pumping and psychedelic enthusiasm, full of energy. Wonderful guitar runs with tight chords and driving rhythms. The arrangements are lavish with a quiet moment here and there that is supported by a (farfisa) organ, as in the end of the opening song Wayo. But what is especially striking are the vocals of Moonlight Benjamin. A voice with intensive expressiveness, which is warm and broad in color. Authentic, recognizable, characteristic and very passionate. A musician who spread Haitian culture over the world in a sincere way. No wonder that her nickname and honorary title is the Vodou Priestess of Blues-Rock: credit where credit is due!
