Pianist Floris Kappeyne nam met zijn trio het intieme album Closer op. Een persoonlijke CD in een pas-op-de-plaats voor een gedreven musicus.

Het ontstaan van het album Closer vindt zijn oorsprong in 2021. Floris Kappeyne besluit van Amsterdam naar Osnabrück te wandelen, zo’n 250 km verderop, om daar in een studio opnames te maken. Uiteindelijk worden dat 33 improvisaties, waarvan er 11 op zijn album Half of what I say is meaningless verschenen, april 2022. Een CD met persoonlijke stukken die een zelfreflectie vormen in de post-Corona tijd. Die zoektocht zet hij nu voort op zijn nieuwe album Closer. Een CD die werd opgenomen in het Château St.Loup in Frankrijk, in één kamer om één intieme atmosfeer te creëren die de muziek nog dichter bij de luisteraar brengt. Bovendien zijn er geluidseffecten aan de muziek toegevoegd zoals haardvuur, een deur, geschuifel, lopen, slaan van een pendule of de wind.

Op Closer wordt Kapeynne bijgestaan door contrabassist Tijs Klaassen en drummer Wouter Kühne. Twee muzikanten die musiceren vanuit het principe minder-is-meer. Zeer fraai ondersteunen en vullen zij het pianowerk aan. Twee musici die zich dienstbaar opstellen, zonder effectbejag, maar dát spelen wat de muziek op dat moment nodig heeft. Neem het stuk Fantasy. De contrabas speelt op de tel mee met de linkerhand van de piano om vervolgens een langzaam thema als strijkend ten gehore te brengen terwijl het slagwerk uitgroeit van korte cymbal-klanken tot groovend brushes-werk.

De composities zijn ingetogen met verrassende en soms grillige thematiek met steeds het klavier in het middelpunt. Alhoewel de akkoorden en thema’s onverwacht overkomen, worden ze steeds toegankelijker en raak je vertrouwder met het metier. Een lichte discrepantie die je warm meevoert langs het innerlijk labyrint. Het album opent met Mirror II. Een met arpeggio’s overgoten werk, met thematiek in de rechterhand van de piano, gevolgd door een bassolo en geluidseffecten. Eigenlijk een werk dat een overall sfeer neerzet. Fraai is ook Powder Blue, Burgundy and Sage, een stuk met sferische Thelonious Monk-invloeden. Het album sluit af met de bijna psalm-achtige compositie Memories Lost, like Tears in Rain. Een compositie vol met op-de-tel noten, waardoor het een markant & spannend timbre krijgt.

Floris Kappeyne is een bevlogen musicus die met Closer de innerlijke diepgang opzoekt, deze ook vindt en hem met zijn trio vervolgens moeiteloos overbrengt. Een fraaie en muzikale win-win situatie.

Pianist Floris Kappeyne recorded the intimate album Closer with his trio. A personal CD and a step back for a passionate musician.

The album Closer originated in 2021. Floris Kappeyne decided to walk from Amsterdam to Osnabrück (Germany), about 250 km, to make recordings in a studio there. In the end, he recorded 33 improvisations, of which 11 appeared on his album Half of what I say is meaningless, April 2022. A CD with personal pieces that form a self-reflection in the post-Corona era. He now continues that quest on his new album Closer. A CD that was recorded in the Château St. Loup in France, in one room to create an intimate atmosphere that brings the music even closer to the listener. In addition, sound effects have been added to the music, such as a fire, a door, shuffling, walking, striking a clock or the wind.

On Closer, Kapeynne is assisted by double bassist Tijs Klaassen and drummer Wouter Kühne. Two musicians who play music, based on the principle that less is more. They support and complement the piano work very nicely. Two musicians who take a subservient attitude, without any pursuit of effect. They just play what the music needs at that moment. For example the composition Fantasy. The double bass plays along with the left hand of the piano on the beat and then plays a slow theme with the bow while the percussion develops from short cymbal sounds to grooving brush work.

The compositions are subdued with surprising and sometimes whimsical themes, always with the piano in the center. Although the chords and themes come across as unexpected, they become more and more accessible and you become more familiar with the metier. A slight discrepancy that warmly carries you along to the inner labyrinth. The album opens with Mirror II. An arpeggio-drenched work, with themes in the right hand of the piano, followed by a bass solo and sound effects. Actually a work that creates an overall atmosphere. Also beautiful is Powder Blue, Burgundy and Sage, a piece with spherical Thelonious Monk tides. The album closes with the almost psalm-like composition Memories Lost, like Tears in Rain. A composition full of on-the-beat notes, giving it a striking & exciting timbre.

Floris Kappeyne is an inspired musician who seeks out the inner depth with Closer, finds it and then effortlessly conveys it with his trio. A beautiful and musical win-win situation.
