Op excellente wijze vertaalde het duo TOEAC werken van J. S. Bach naar twee accordeons op hun nieuwe album Ben by Bach.

TOEAC bestaat uit de accordeonistes Renée Bekkers (1985) en Pieternel Berkers (1986). Beiden studeerden ze aan het Fontys Conservatorium in Tilburg en aan de Royal Danish Academy of Music in Kopenhagen, waar zij in 2015 hun solistenopleiding afrondden. In 2002 echter, richtten zij TOEAC op. Een duo dat zich heeft gespecialiseerd in het uitvoeren van klassiek repertoire dat door hun zelf werd gearrangeerd of speciaal voor hun werd gecomponeerd voor twee accordeons. Ze namen inmiddels vier albums op en gaven concerten in o.a. Europa, Zuid-Afrika, Canada en China. Naast duo-optredens werkte TOEAC samen met schrijvers (Kader Abdollah en Barbara van Loon), theatermakers (tegenwoordig met acteur Jack Wouterse in Bloedkoraal) en orkest De Volharding, het Asko|Schönberg Ensemble en het Radio Filharmonisch Orkest. Het is wellicht een wat kleurloze opsomming, maar deze geeft wel aan dat TOEAC steeds op zoek is naar nieuwe muzikale uitdagingen en accordeon-wegen.

Het accordeon-avontuur gaat door op hun nieuwste CD Ben by Bach uit 2021, die opent met hun long-time-favorite van TOEAC, de Passacaglia & Fugue in C mineur van J.S. Bach. Een orgelwerk dat Bach componeerde toen hij ongeveer 25 jaar oud was, gebaseerd op de variatie-technieken die zowel in de passacaglia als in de fuga voorkomen. Fascinerend om te horen hoe TOEAC het werk uiteen rafelt, de compositie ontleedt en de orgelpartij prachtig verdeelt over twee accordeons. En dat is nog niet alles: want als luisteraar ervaar je deze hernieuwde compositie als één harmonische eenheid, die weliswaar bestaat uit twee accordeons, maar die elkaar zo perfect aanvullen dat het klinkt als een-grote-accordeon. Dat vereist niet alleen een goede instrumentbeheersing maar ook uitstekend samenspel waarbij de beide accordeon-partijen naadloos in elkaar grijpen, elkaar aanvullen en versterken. Zeer inspirerend uitgevoerd door TOEAC.

Het tweede werk op de CD Ben by Bach is de compositie Suite Dreams van Benjamin de Murashkin. Een componist die we ook al tegenkwamen op het debuutalbum Nordic Music waarop TOEAC een ode geeft aan de Noorse muziek, naar aanleiding van hun studie in Kopenhagen. Suite Dreams bestaat uit 5 delen met elk hun eigen timbre, met dissonante harmonieën, zoals in de Allemande, of de harmonische signatuur in Courante en Sarabande, met repeterende ritmiek en glooiende thematiek die verborgen zitten tussen de noten, om te eindigen met het lichtvoetige en vrolijk dartelende gigue.

Geweldig hoe TOEAC speelt met de accordeon, het avontuur opzoekt in zowel kleuring, articulatie, speeltechnieken en repertoire. Kenmerken die overduidelijk te horen zijn in het Brandenburg Concerto No.3 in G majeur van J.S. Bach, het slotstuk van Ben by Bach. Een album waarop onmiskenbaar naar voren komt dat de ene accordeon niet zonder de andere kan, ze complementair zijn en volledig op elkaar afgestemd in fantastische, coherente muziek.

In an excellent way the duo TOEAC translated works by J. S. Bach for two accordions on their new album Ben by Bach.

The duo TOEAC consists of the accordionists Renée Bekkers (1985) and Pieternel Berkers (1986). They both studied at the Fontys Conservatorium in Tilburg and at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where they completed their soloist training in 2015. In 2002, however, they started TOEAC. A duo that is specialized in performing classical repertoire, arranged by themselves or especially is written for two accordions. They recorded four albums and gave concerts in Europe, South Africa, Canada and China. In addition to duo performances, TOEAC has collaborated with writers (Kader Abdollah and Barbara van Loon), theater makers (currently with actor Jack Wouterse in Bloedkoraal) and orchestra De Volharding, the Asko|Schönberg Ensemble and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. It may be a somewhat colorless enumeration, but it also indicates that TOEAC is always looking for new musical challenges and new accordion paths.

The accordion adventure continues on their latest and fourth CD Ben by Bach (2021), which opens with their long-time favorite of TOEAC, the Passacaglia & Fugue in C minor by J.S. Bach. An organ work that Bach composed when he was about 25 years old, based on the variation techniques found in both the passacaglia and the fugue. It is fascinating how TOEAC unravels the work, dissects the composition and divides the organ part beautifully over two accordions. And that’s not it: because as a listener you experience this renewed composition as one harmonic unit. Although the arrangement consists of two accordions, they complement each other so perfectly that it sounds like one-large-accordion. This not only requires good instrument control, but also excellent teamwork in which the two accordion parts seamlessly interlock, complement and reinforce each other. Very inspired performed by TOEAC.

The second composition on the CD Ben by Bach is Suite Dreams by Benjamin de Murashkin. A composer we also encountered on the debut album Nordic Music on which TOEAC pays tribute to Norwegian music as a result of their studies in Copenhagen. Suite Dreams consists of five parts, each with its own timbre. Dissonant harmonies as we hear in the Allemande, followed by the harmonic Courante and Sarabande, with repetitive rhythms and striking themes hidden between the notes, to end with the light-footed and a merry frolicking gigue.

Amazing how TOEAC plays with the accordion, looking for adventure in colouring, articulation, playing techniques and repertoire. Characteristics that can be clearly heard in the Brandenburg Concerto No.3 in G major by J.S. Bach, the final piece of Ben by Bach. An album that unmistakably shows that one accordion cannot play without the other. They are complementary and fully attuned to each other in amazing music.
