Het was Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) die het stuk Trio Op. 47 componeerde voor altviool, tenorsax en piano. Geïnspireerd door dit werk, gaf het Trio Brax drie Noorse componisten een compositieopdracht een werk te componeren voor dezelfde bezetting.

Trio Brax bestaat uit altvioliste Julia Neher, saxofonist Ola Asdahl Rokkones en pianist Sergej Osadchuk. Het ensemble komt uit Tromsø, een stad in het noorden van Noorwegen en werd opgericht in 2015. In de ongebruikelijke bezetting altviool, saxofoon en piano is weinig repertoire te vinden. Daarom kwam het trio op het idee om drie Noorse componisten een compositie-opdracht te geven voor het schrijven van nieuw werk in deze bezetting, met het Trio Op. 47 van Paul Hindemith als voorbeeld. Een werk uit 1928, van de Duitse componist die zelf ook altviolist was. De compositie bestaat uit zeven delen van gemiddeld twee minuten, waarbij de saxofoonpartij eigenlijk bedoeld was om gespeeld te worden door de heckelphone, een soort tenorhobo. Aangezien dit instrument, zelfs al in de tijd van Hindemith, lastig te krijgen was, is het, gezien het timbre, geen enkel problem het te vervangen door de tenorsax.

Het openingsstuk van dit Trio Op. 47 is voor piano-solo en bevat de thematiek die terugkomt in de andere delen. De muziek is gedurfd, vrij en zeer beweeglijk, vol imitatie-technieken, herhalingen en (ferme) repetitieve ritmiek.

Op dit debuut-album speelt Trio Brax naast Paul Hindemith’s Trio Op. 47 dus ook nieuwe werken, drie premières, speciaal voor dit trio geschreven door: Kjell Habbestad (1955) die het 3-delig werk Tres Flores (Drie bloemen) schreef, Håvard Lund (1970) componeerde The Magpie & 1 (De ekster) en Helge Iberg (1954) Ut á stæle hester (Een stijlvol paard).

Deze nieuw gecomponeerde werken sluiten prachtig aan bij het werk van Hindemith. De orkestrale benadering van het klavier geeft de muziek een breed en weids karakter, die door het gebruik van dissonante harmonieën en onverwachte wendingen alleen maar avontuurlijker en boeiender wordt. De altviool- en saxofoonpartijen lijken hierdoor soms los te staan van begeleiding. Ze lijken hun eigen weg te kiezen om vervolgens te versmelten in de brede laag van het klavier, de imitatie aan te gaan of kleurrijk de toplaag te vormen van het thema. Deze wisselingen volgen elkaar razend snel op, waardoor de drie musici niet alleen hun positie binnen de compositie razendsnel moeten bepalen maar er ook nog vliegensvlug op moeten anticiperen. Dat vergt nogal wat vakmanschap. En dat is nou precies wat hier te horen is. Een uitgelezen bezetting, die sporadisch voorkomt, maar zeer organisch overkomt, uitgevoerd door drie vakbekwame musici.

It was Paul Hindemith (1895-1963) who wrote the piece Trio Op. 47 for viola, tenor sax and piano. Inspired by this work, it was reason for Trio Brax to commission three Norwegian composers to compose a work with the same instrumentation.

Trio Brax consists of viola player Julia Neher, saxophonist Ola Asdahl Rokkones and pianist Sergej Osadchuk. The ensemble comes from Tromsø, a city in the north of Norway and was founded in 2015. There is little repertoire to be found in the unusual line-up of viola, saxophone and piano. That is why the trio came up with the idea of commissioning three Norwegian composers to write new work in this line-up, with the Trio Op. 47 by Paul Hindemith as an example. A work from 1928, by the German composer who was also a violist himself. The composition consists of seven parts of an average of two minutes, in which the saxophone part was actually intended to be played by the heckelphone, a kind of tenor oboe. Since this instrument was hard to get, even in Hindemith’s time, it is no problem to replace it with the tenor sax, given the timbre.

The opening piece of this Trio Op. 47 is for piano solo and contains the theme that recurs in the other movements. The music is daring, free and very moving, full of imitation techniques, repetitions and (firm) repetitive rhythms.

On this debut album, Trio Brax plays alongside Paul Hindemith’s Trio Op. 47 therefore also new works, three premieres, written especially for this trio by: Kjell Habbestad (1955, who wrote the 3-part work Tres Flores (Three Flowers), Håvard Lund (1970) composed The Magpie & 1 and Helge Iberg (1954) Ut á stæle hester (A stylish horse).

These newly composed works fit in beautifully with the work of Hindemith. The orchestral approach of the keyboard gives the music a broad and expansive character, which becomes more adventurous and fascinating through the use of dissonant harmonies and unexpected turns. The viola and saxophone parts therefore sometimes seem to be separate from accompaniment. They seem to choose their own path and then merge into the broad layer of the keyboard, imitate or colorfully form the top layer of the theme. These changes follow each other in rapid succession, so that the three musicians not only have to determine their position within the composition at lightning speed, but also have to anticipate to it very quickly. That requires quite a skill. And that is exactly what can be heard here. An exquisite line-up, which occurs sporadically, but comes across very organically, performed by three excellent musicians.
