In 1977 nam de Belgische gitarist Philip Catherine met de Amerikaanse gitarist Larry Coryell het album Twin House op. Een legendarische LP waarop beide gitaristen een gitaar-duel uitvechten in volstrekte harmonie.

Vijf jaar later speelt Catherine samen met gitarist en bassist Nicolas Fiszman, destijds 17 jaar oud. Fiszman (1964) was vanaf zijn 11de een leerling van Philip Catherine. Hij nam zijn debuut studio-opname op toen hij 13 jaar oud was, werd de begeleider van de zangeres Maurane en speelde mee op het album End of August van de groep van Catherine, waar ook saxofonist Charlie Mariano lid van was. Fiszman werkte later ook met Johnny Halliday, Zazie, Françoise Hardy, Vanessa Paradis, Francis Cabrel en hij toerde met Sting. Onlangs bracht hij zijn solo-album uit waarop o.a. Catherine en de accordeonist Tuur Floorizone te horen zijn.

Philip Catherine is een musicus die al jaren lang uitblinkt door sympathiek gitaarspel, zonder effectbejag. Een gitarist die bijzondere stukken componeert (luister eens naar zijn album Oscar uit 1988) en zijn medemusici, op dit album zijn ‘leerling’ Fiszman, de ruimte geeft om te schitteren. Dat is overduidelijk te horen in alle muziek die deze Belgische jazz-gigant heeft uitgebracht.

The Lost Recordings werden gemaakt Live at the Berlin Jazzbühne Festival in Oost-Berlijn, 1982. Het album is een aaneenschakeling van virtuoos gitaarspel van twee getalenteerde gitaristen die elkaar moeiteloos volgen, de ruimte geven en elkaar aanvullen. Thema’s worden afzonderlijk gespeeld of unisono zoals in Air Power, waar Fiszman op de basgitaar te horen is en er virtuoos op soleert. Binnen de grenzen van de muzikale lijnen als: structuur, schema’s, akkoorden en dynamiek dagen ze elkaar uit en nemen ze volledig de muzikale vrijheid. Dat resulteert in gitaar-acrobatiek waar beide gitaristen niet voor elkaar onderdoen. Ze traden die dag op met hetzelfde concert, zowel in Oost- als West-Berlijn, waarin ze composities speelden van Philip Catherine, op Crystal Bells na, dat door Charlie Mariano werd gecomponeerd.

In the series The Lost Recordings, the album Live at the Berlin Jazzbühne Festival 1982 by guitarists Philip Catherin & Nicolas Fiszman is a dynamic concert recording from East Berlin in the early 1980s.

In 1977, Belgian guitarist Philip Catherine recorded the album Twin House with American guitarist Larry Coryell. A legendary LP on which both guitarists fight a kind of guitar duel in complete harmony.

Five years later, Catherine plays together with guitarist and bassist Nicolas Fiszman, who was 17 years old at the time. Fiszman (1964) was a student of Philip Catherine from the age of 11. He made his debut studio recording when he was 13 years old, became the accompanist for the singer Maurane and played on the album End of August by Catherine’s band, which also included saxophonist Charlie Mariano. Fiszman later also worked with Johnny Halliday, Zazie, Françoise Hardy, Vanessa Paradis, Francis Cabrel and he toured with Sting. Recently he released his solo album, featuring Catherine and the accordionist Tuur Floorizone, among others.

For years Philip Catherine is a musician who has excelled in sympathetic guitar playing, without the pursuit of effect. A guitarist who composes special pieces (listen for example to his excellent album Oscar from 1988). He gives his fellow musicians, in this case his ‘student’ Fiszman, the space to shine. You can clearly hear that in all the music that this Belgian jazz giant has released.

The Lost Recordings were made Live at the Berlin Jazzbühne Festival in East Berlin in 1982. The album is a succession of virtuoso guitar playing by two talented guitarists who follow each other effortlessly, give space and complement each other. Themes are played individually or in unison as in Air Power, where Fiszman can be heard on the bass guitar and performs virtuoso on it. Within the boundaries of musical lines such as: structure, schemes, chords and dynamics, they challenge each other and take complete musical freedom. This results in guitar acrobatics where both guitarists are not inferior to each other. They performed the same concert that day, in both East and West Berlin, playing compositions by Philip Catherine, except for Crystal Bells, which was composed by Charlie Mariano.
