Het kwartet Rumbaristas brengt met zes gastmusici een zeer dansbare mix van Zuid- en Oost-Europese & Caraïbische muziek.

Beats met wereld-alure werden o.a. in de jaren ’90 door Manu Chao bekend onder de naam mestizo. Een stijl die grote bekendheid kreeg en waar flamenco, Cubaanse son, Colombiaanse cumba of Peruaanse chicha worden overgoten met Oost-Europese blazers en ondersteund door stevige bas en drums.

Rumbaristas bestaat uit de Catalaan Willy Fuego, die al enkele solo-cd’s opnam, waaronder het in 2016 uitgebrachte Acontracorriente. De Franse trompettist & toetsenist Thomas Morzewski, bassist Tomas De Smet en drummer Roel Poriau. De laatste twee kwamen we al tegen bij de Vlaamse groepen Think of One en Laïs. Het kwartet wordt bijgestaan door een aantal gastmusici waaronder violist & accordeonist Nele Paelinck, de zangeressen Amparo Sanchez, Joan Garriga en de Algerijnse zangeres Aziza Brahim.

Zoals gezegd, de groep haalt zijn inspiratie uit diverse stijlen. Door te jongleren (Malabares) met deze diverse stijlen, mixt Rumbaristas de muziek tot een geheel eigen sound. Daarnaast worden de teksten gezongen in het Spaans, Italiaans en Arabisch en zelfs in het Vlaams! Geweldig hoe de Rumbaristas zich laat inspireren door de Colombiaanse cumbia in Cumbia Currandera en, de afgeleide stijl hiervan, de Peruaanse chicha in Palana. De chicha ontstond eind jaren ’60 in Lima, nadat veel musici vanuit de bergen naar de hoofdstad trokken, op zoek naar werk. Herkenbaar is daarbij het heerlijke Farfisa-orgel. De Zuid-Spaanse rumba schalt in Rumbeando en el anochecer, terwijl de Cubaanse son weer verscholen ligt in El Pez en wordt overgoten met Roma-brass uit Oost-Europa. In de luchtige albumafsluiter Somos Rumberos klinken de Mexicaanse mariachi-trompetten met hun snelle trillers en hoge klank. Door al deze facetten creëert Rumbaristas een turbulente & opwindende zomerse sfeer die dampend uit je speakers schalt.

The quartet Rumbaristas recorded with six guest musicians a very danceable mix of Southern and Eastern European & Caribbean music.

World-alure beats were known by, among others, Manu Chao in the 1990s and mixed it into the new style mestizo. That mix became widely known and is a mixture of flamenco, Cuban son, Colombian cumba or Peruvian chicha and topped with Eastern European horns, supported by solid bass and drums.

Rumbaristas consists of the Catalan Willy Fuego, who has already recorded several solo CDs, including Acontracorriente, released in 2016. French trumpeter & keyboardist Thomas Morzewski, bassist Tomas De Smet and drummer Roel Poriau. We already encountered the last two musicians in the Flemish groups Think of One and Laïs. The quartet is assisted by a number of guest musicians including violinist & accordionist Nele Paelinck, the vocalists Amparo Sanchez, Joan Garriga and the Algerian singer Aziza Brahim.

As said before, the group gets their inspiration from various styles. By juggling (Malabares) with these various styles, Rumbaristas mixes their music into a unique sound. In addition, the lyrics are sung in Spanish, Italian and Arabic and even in Flemish! It’s great how the Rumbaristas are inspired by the Colombian cumbia in Cumbia Currandera and, its derived style, the Peruvian chicha in Palana. The chicha originated in Lima after many musicians moved to the capital from the mountains in search of work in the late 1960s. Recognizable here is the wonderful Farfisa organ. The southern Spanish rumba sound in Rumbeando en el anochecer, while the Cuban son is hidden in El Pez and and topped with Roma brass from Eastern Europe. The Mexican mariachi trumpets sound on the album closing song Somos Rumberos with their fast trills and high sound. Through all these facets, Rumbaristas creates a turbulent, exciting & danceable summer atmosphere.
