In een warm metier word je ontvoerd door pianist Bill Laurence en multi-snarenspeler Michael League naar een plek voor enige contemplatie. Beide musici kennen elkaar van het baanbrekende orkest Snarky Puppy, dat door Michael League in 2004 werd opgericht.

Hun debuut-album Where You Wish You Were is een innige dialoog van melodie-gestuurde muziek die je brengt naar een evenwichtige omgeving, waar akkoorden en melodie harmonisch in elkaar grijpen. Intiem en sfeervol, met veel aandacht voor subtiele klankdynamiek en verzorgde frasering. Bill Laurence speelt piano en Michael League speelt naast ûd (Arabische luit) ook basgitaar en ngoni: een West-Afrikaans snaarinstrument.

De stukken hebben een grote spanwijdte vol innige structuren. De muziek zit vol geraffineerde muzikale vondsten, kleine versieringen (korte voorslagen), dynamische verschillen met fraaie harmonische en melodische wendingen die zo natuurlijk worden uitgevoerd dat ze soms onopvallend verborgen liggen in het arrangement. Maar er gebeurt nog meer. Zo is Round House opvallend door het stuwende ritme van de piano en staccato-solo en is het funky Tricks overgoten met galm, gevolgd door een hypnotiserende piano- en baslijn.

Maar toch is het vooral de rust waar Where You Wish You Were mee grossiert. Een rust die zo welkom (en nodig) is in deze steeds drukker wordende wereld.

The music on Where You Wish You Were takes you in a flow of beautiful themes, thorough playing on piano and string instruments.

In a warm metier, pianist Bill Laurence and multi-string player Michael League lead you away to a place of some contemplation. Both musicians know each other from the pioneering orchestra Snarky Puppy, which was founded by Michael League in 2004.

Their debut album Where You Wish You Were is an intimate dialogue of melody-driven music that brings you to a balanced environment, where chords and melody interlock harmoniously. Intimate and atmospheric, with a lot of attention to subtle dynamics and careful phrasing. Bill Laurence plays the piano and, in addition to ûd (Arabic lute), Michael League plays bass guitar and ngoni, a West African string instrument.

The pieces have a large span, with splendid intimate structures. The compositions are full of refined musical inventions, small embellishments (short ornament notes), dynamic differences with beautiful harmonic and melodic twists that are performed so naturally that they are sometimes inconspicuously hidden in the arrangement. But more is happening. Round House, for example, is striking due to the driving rhythm of the piano and staccato solo, and the funky piece Tricks is topped with reverberation, followed by a hypnotic piano and bass line.

But it is mainly the tranquility that Where You Wish You Were deals with. A kind of peace that is so welcome (and needed) in this increasingly busy world.
