En jawel, daar is dan het debuut solo-album Heart in Mind van gitarist Peter Tiehuis. Een veelgevraagd musicus die sinds 1996 de vaste gitarist is van het Metropool Orkest. Hij studeerde aan de Conservatoria van Enschede en Den Haag en geeft tegenwoordig les aan het Amsterdams Conservatorium. Hij speelde met The Skymasters, de bands Batida, The Wolfgang Haffner Band en The Chris Hinze Combination. Hij trad op met nationale artiesten zoals zangeressen Trijntje Oosterhuis en Ilse DeLange en de zangers Lee Towers en Rob de Nijs. Maar hij werkte ook samen met jazzmusici waaronder Freddie Hubbard, Al Jarreau, Charlie Mariano, Mike Stern, Jasper van ‘t Hof, The Brecker Brothers, Pat Metheny, George Duke, John Scofield en Herbie Hancock. Nou ja, het is wel een hele opsomming, maar deze geeft wel aan dat we hier te maken met een doorgewinterde gitarist die zo’n beetje alle hoeken van jazz- en popland heeft ontdekt. Een solo-album kon niet uitblijven waarop we zijn liefde horen voor jazz-georïenteerde muziek. Op Heart in Mind staan 11 nieuw gecomponeerd stukken van Tiehuis, Karel Boehlee, Iterson en een cover van Steeley Dan. Peter Tiehuis wordt bijgestaan door Karel Boehlee piano en synths, Theo de Jong op bas, drummer Jasper van Hulten en percussionist Martin Verdonk.

Alle composities zijn instrumentaal, met melodische thema’s, gevolgd door solo’s op gitaar en piano en synths. Lekker compacte pop, (jazz)funk en blues, gevat in strakke arrangementen. Fraai is de langzame 6/8 blues Heart in Mind en Look behind a Mountain, met een knipoog naar Pat Metheny. Ook 3 Planets is een uitschieter waarin synths-kleuren en dubbele gitaarpartijen je even het universum laten zien. Tiehuis heeft een markant touché. Duidelijk en zonder omhaal horen we thema’s en evenwichtige solo’s met geen noot teveel. Muziek-om-de-muziek, zonder effectbejag. Dat geldt overigens ook voor het klavierwerk van Boehlee, die met zijn notenkeuze en timing een echte lyricus is. Heart in Mind is een voortreffelijk album van musici die weliswaar het Hart in gedachte hebben, maar spelen met het Hart op de Tong. Gewoon recht voor je raap en vertellen wat je te zeggen hebt, eerlijk en oprecht. Dat maakt dat het album zeer innemend, behaaglijk en zeer de moeite waard en daarmee een aanwinst voor de Nederlandse geïmproviseerde muziek!

Guitarist Peter Tiehuis is a broadly oriented musician who plays an excellent set with his T5 on his album Heart in Mind.

And yes, here is the debut solo album Heart in Mind by guitarist Peter Tiehuis and his T5. A much sought-after musician who has been the permanent guitarist of the Metropool Orkest since 1996. He studied at the Conservatories of Enschede and The Hague and currently teaches at the Amsterdam Conservatory. He played with The Skymasters, the bands Batida, The Wolfgang Haffner Band and The Chris Hinze Combination. He performed with national artists such as singers Trijntje Oosterhuis and Ilse DeLange and vocalists like Lee Towers and Rob de Nijs. But he also collaborated with jazz musicians including Freddie Hubbard, Al Jarreau, Charlie Mariano, Mike Stern, Jasper van ’t Hof, The Brecker Brothers, Pat Metheny, George Duke, John Scofield and Herbie Hancock. Well, it is quite a list, but it does indicate that we are dealing here with a seasoned guitarist who has discovered just about every corner of jazz and pop music. A solo album was inevitable on which we hear his love for jazz-oriented music. Heart in Mind contains 11 newly composed pieces by Tiehuis, Karel Boehlee, Iterson and a cover by Steeley Dan. Peter Tiehuis is assisted by Karel Boehlee on piano and synths, Theo de Jong on bass, drummer Jasper van Hulten and percussionist Martin Verdonk.

All compositions are instrumental, with melodic themes followed by solos on guitar and piano and synths. Nice and compact pop, (jazz) funk and blues, contained in tight arrangements. Beautiful is the slow 6/8 blues Heart in Mind and Look behind a Mountain, with a little Pat Metheny timbre. 3 Planets is also an outlier in which synths colors and double guitar parts show you the universe for a moment. Tiehuis has a striking way of playing, with is tight touché. Clearly and without further ado we hear themes and balanced solos with only necessary notes. Music-for-the-music, without effect. This also applies to the keyboard work of Boehlee, who is a real lyricist with his choice of notes and timing. Heart in Mind is an excellent album by musicians who have their Heart in mind, but play with the Heart on the Sleeve. Just straight up and say what you have to say, clear and honestly. That makes the album captivating, pleasant and very worthwhile and therefore an asset within Dutch improvised music!
