Op de debuut-duo CD Within this Stone horen we twee veelzijdige musici: de gitarist Lionel Loueke en drummer & percussionist Ziv Ravitz.

In een uiterst bescheiden, maar zeer doeltreffende bezetting gaven de uit Benin afkomstige gitarist Lionel Loueke en de Israëlische percussionist & drummer Ziv Ravitz een verrassend en bruisend concert op 12 december 2021 in de lokale jazz-club in Muri, een plaats in Noord-Zwitserland, nabij Zürich. Dit concert werd opgenomen en is nu op CD verschenen. Beide muzikanten hebben met diverse musici samengewerkt en zijn derhalve wel wat gewend en daardoor aan elkaar gewaagd. Zo kwamen we Loueke al tegen bij Kenny Garret, Herbie Hancock en Angelique Kidjo en is Ziv Ravitz bij Lee Konitz en was hij medeoprichter van het Shai Maestro Trio.

Op Within this Stone gaan ze terug naar de basis. Virtuoos samenspel waar ritme en melodie worden samengebracht tot coherente muziek. De composities blinken uit in subtiliteit en nuanceringen en bewegen op het snijvlak van jazz, funk, afro- en geïmproviseerde muziek. Het spel is gedoseerd en zit vol ghots-notes: korte, bijna onhoorbare accenten die de muziek een suggestieve lading geeft en de composities enorm levendig maakt. Naast stevig werk zoals In 2 It, zijn het vooral de verstilde stukken die adembenemend mooi zijn zoals Chant, waar een sobere melodie wordt ondersteund door roffelend percussie-werk en uitgroeit tot stuwende muziek, waarin Loueke de melodie fonetisch meezingt. Shadows on the Wall heeft een haast psalmachtig thema. In een fraaie melodie lijkt het alsof je schaduwen ziet opdoemen en vervagen, die worden gesuggereerd door het gebruik van volume-veranderingen in de gitaar. Het in 3-telsmaat gespeelde Peira Aussane leunt aan tegen de West-Afrikaanse muziek, waarop Ravitz zo af en toe polyritmische uitstapjes maakt, overgoten met gitaar- en zangwerk van Loueke. Tenslotte, het slotnummer Vi Gnin, wat een verstilde compositie is met warme vocalen van Loueke. Beide musici zijn muzikale schilders op hun instrument waarmee ze met diverse kleurschakeringen een rijk en inventief audio-spectrum laten horen!

On their debut duo CD Within this Stone we hear two versatile musicians: guitarist Lionel Loueke en drummer / percussionist Ziv Ravitz.

In an extremely modest, but very effective line-up, guitarist Lionel Loueke from Benin and Israeli percussionist and drummer Ziv Ravitz gave a surprising and vibrant concert in the local jazz club in Muri, a place in northern Switzerland, near Zurich on December 12, 2021. This concert was recorded and is now available on CD. Both musicians have worked with various musicians and are therefore well skilled improvisers. We already met Loueke with Kenny Garret, Herbie Hancock and Angelique Kidjo and Ziv Ravitz played with Lee Konitz and is co-founder of the Shai Maestro Trio.

On Within this Stone they go back to basics. Virtuoso ensemble playing where rhythm and melody are brought together into coherent music. The compositions excel in subtlety and nuances and move on the cutting edge of jazz, funk, afro and improvised music. The playing is dosed and full of ghots notes: short, almost inaudible accents that give the music a suggestive charge and make the compositions extremely lively. In addition to solid work such as In 2 It, it is especially the tranquil pieces that are breathtakingly beautiful, such as Chant, where a sober melody is supported by rolling percussion work and grows into driving music, in which Loueke sings the melody phonetically. Shadows on the Wall has an almost psalm-like theme. In a beautiful melody, it seems as if you see shadows looming and fading, which are suggested by the use of volume changes in the guitar. Peira Aussane, played in 3 -time, leans towards West African music, on which Ravitz occasionally plays polyrhythmic parts, topped with guitar and vocal work by Loueke. Finally, the closing song Vi Gnin, which is a tranquil composition with lovely vocals by Loueke. Both musicians are musical painters on their instruments. They create a rich and inventive audio spectrum with various shades of color!
