Zanger Mwezi WaQ. brengt met zijn nieuwe cd Le Blues des Sourd-Muets een ode aan muzikanten uit de Comoren.

Zanger Mwezi WaQ. (Soeuf Albadawi) draagt zijn nieuwe album Le Blues des Sourd-muets op aan enkele artiesten die bekend waren in de periode tussen 1970 & 2000. Zoals zanger/gitarist Abou Chihabi die het nationale volkslied Komoro componeerde. De zangers Ali Affandi en Souleymane Mze Cheikh die vele hits hadden op de Comoren waaronder Mwana en Nkonyondzima. De Comoren is een eilandengroep ten oosten van Afrika, tussen Madagascar en Mozambique. Door de eeuwen heen is er op deze archipel een smeltkroes ontstaan van rassen en culturen, wat ook terug te horen is in de muziek, waardoor we er een Europees/Afrikaans/Arabische mix aantreffen.

Die mix vinden we ook terug in de muziek van Mwezi WaQ. Ritmische melodieën (soms unisono) met sobere, maar zeer doeltreffende begeleidingen op gitaar, percussie en (koor/meerstemmige)zang. Opvallend en verrassend is het gebruik van de cello die met fraaie melancholische tegenmelodieën de heimwee naar het verleden symboliseert.

Mwezi WaQ. heeft een warm en oorspronkelijk stemgeluid waarmee hij op natuurlijke wijze zingt over de vervlogen tijden, oudere generaties, het kolonialisme en de immigratie. De muziek klinkt fris, overtuigend en openhartig en wordt bevlogen uitgevoerd, in steeds wisselende bezettingen. Fraai is het slotstuk Radio Mix. Een compilatie van op locatie opgenomen liederen. Dat klinkt niet alleen levendig, maar laat ook horen hoe dicht muziek bij de bewoners staat en zijn authenticiteit (nog) niet heeft verloren.

Singer Mwezi WaQ pays tribute to musicians from the Comoros with his new CD Le Blues des Sourd-Muets.

Singer Mwezi WaQ. (Soeuf Albadawi) dedicates his new album Le Blues des Sourd-muets to several artists who were popular in the period between 1970 and 2000, such as singer/guitarist Abou Chihabi who composed the national anthem Komoro. The singers Ali Affandi and Souleymane Mze Cheikh who had many hits on the Comoros including Mwana and Nkonyondzima. The Comoros is an archipelago east of Africa, between Madagascar and Mozambique. Over the centuries a melting pot of different cultures has emerged on this archipelago, which can also be heard in the music, in an European / African / Arab mix.

We also find that mix in the music of Mwezi WaQ. Rhythmic melodies (sometimes in unison) with sober, but very effective accompaniments on guitar, percussion and (choir/polyphonic) vocals. Striking and surprising is the use of the cello, which symbolizes the nostalgia for past times with a beautiful melancholic counter-melodies.

Mwezi WaQ. has a warm and original voice with which he sings naturally about the past times of older generations, colonialism and immigration. The music sounds fresh, convincing and candid and is performed passionately, in ever-changing line-ups. The final piece Radio Mix is beautiful and totally different than the other songs. A compilation of songs recorded on location. This not only sounds lively, but also shows how close music is to the residents and has not lost its authenticity.
