Het project King’N’Doom ontstaat als muzikant Pavel Šmíd en Martin Píro (van het Tsjechische Rustical Records) een gelegenheidsopname maken met Cheikh Lô tijdens het Colors of Ostrava Festival in 2018. Een spontane opname, gewoon in een caravan, die zo in de smaak valt dat men besluit een wereldband op te richten met musici uit diverse landen om dit project verder uit te bouwen. Het gezelschap staat nu op dit LIVE album, opgenomen tijdens het Colors of Ostrava Festival in 2022. Naast de gitaristen Pavel Šmíd en Cheikh Lô horen we balofoonspeler Abdoulaye Dembele uit Burkina Faso, weergaloos in het openingsnummer Jah’rabi. De drummers Léopold Lô en Dave Smith. Smith die we al eerder tegenkwamen in de groep van Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), de basgitarist Tomáš Liška, de Israëlische toetseniste Sharon Mansur (stuwende solo in Jamm en schitterende & inventieve Arabisch georiënteerde solo in Zikr King Lô) en saxofonist Petr Smékal (fraai in Guiss Guiss en heerlijk solide Bourama).

De muziek klinkt doorwrocht, strak en heeft een mooie organische flow. Stuwend, met spannende breaks en wisselingen. Opmerkelijk dat een band van acht musici zulke transparante muziek speelt. Iedere muzikant draagt weliswaar een significant deel bij aan de muziek, maar doet dat op subtiele en spitsvondige wijze, zeer beheerst waardoor alle partijen naadloos in elkaar kunnen grijpen en versmelten tot coherente muziek. Daar spreekt respect uit, voor elkaar, maar ook voor de muziek als geheel en is een genot voor de luisteraar.

King’N’Doom is an inspiring collaboration between Senegalese guitarist/singer Cheikh Lô and the band of Czech guitarist and producer Pavel Šmíd.

The King’N’Doom project originated when musician Pavel Šmíd and Martin Píro (from the Czech company Rustical Records) make an occasional recording with Cheikh Lô, during the Colors of Ostrava Festival in 2018. A spontaneous recording, simply in a caravan, which they liked hat much, that they decide to set up a world band with musicians from various countries to create this new project. This band is now on the LIVE album, recorded during the Colors of Ostrava Festival in 2022. In addition to the guitarists Pavel Šmíd and Cheikh Lô, we hear balophone player Abdoulaye Dembele from Burkina Faso, unparalleled in the opening track Jah’rabi. The drummers Léopold Lô and Dave Smith. Smith, whom we previously encountered in the group of Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), bass guitarist Tomáš Liška, Israeli keyboardist Sharon Mansur (powerful solo in Jamm and lovely & inventive Arabic-oriented solo in Zikr King Lô) and saxophonist Petr Smékal (beautiful in Guiss Guiss and wonderfully solid Bourama).

The music sounds well thought out, tight and has a nice organic flow. Passionate, with exciting breaks and time changes. Remarkable that a band of eight musicians plays such transparent music. Although each musician contributes a significant part to the music, he does so in a subtle and smart way, very controlled, so that all instruments can seamlessly come together and merge into coherent music. This expresses respect, for each other, but also for the music as a whole and is a pleasure for every listener!
