De Italiaanse groep Radicanto brengt met verve een fraaie collectie Italiaanse liedjes.

De band Radicanto werd opgericht in 1996, in Bari, Zuid Italië door gitarist en componist Giuseppe De Trizio. Verder bestaat de groep uit zangeres Maria Giaquinto, snarenspeler Adolfo La Volpe, accordeonist Giovanni Chiapparino, saxofonist Claudio Carboni en drummer Francesco De Palma. Als doel stellen ze: de traditionele (Zuid) Italiaanse muziek bekender maken voor een breder publiek. Het nieuwe, elfde, album heet Alle radici del canto, wat Terug naar de roots betekent. En dat is precies wat er gebeurt: met respect voor het verleden, brengen ze een collectie vocale stukken uit, die met die gedachte zijn bewerkt. Ze worden werkelijk innemend gezongen door Maria Giaquinto. Op bevlogen wijze speelt het kwintet, naast eigen werk, ook liedjes van o.a. Pino de Vittorio, de Siciliaanse zangeres Rosa Balistrerie en zangeres Lucilla Galeazzi. In uiteenlopende arrangementen klinkt er avontuurlijke muziek die vol zit met muzikale heerlijkheden, zoals het gebruik van de mandola (soort grote mandoline), sax-, gitaar- en contrabas-solo in het enige instrumentale stuk Annobon, lichte elektronica in het intro van het slaapliedje Lu Furastiero. Soms wordt er stevig uitgepakt, zoals in T’adore e te Rengrázia (met fuzzy gitaarsolo) en het doortastende A Devozione, met een tarantella ritme, geraffineerd met maatwisseling. En dan het gedreven Soj Ciardine. Een lied met een oneindig mooie melodie, meesterlijk gearrangeerd. Het is wellicht een opsomming, maar op dit album heeft elk lied iets eigens, iets karakteristieks. Dat is niet alleen heerlijk om naar te luisteren maar daarnaast ook erg knap gedaan!

The Italian band Radicanto recorded with verve a fine collection of Italian songs.

In 1996 Radicanto was formed in Bari, southern Italy by guitarist and composer Giuseppe De Trizio. The group also consists of singer Maria Giaquinto, string player Adolfo La Volpe, accordionist Giovanni Chiapparino, saxophonist Claudio Carboni and drummer Francesco De Palma. They aim to make traditional (Southern) Italian music more known to a wider audience. The new, eleventh album is called Alle radici del canto, which means Back to the roots. And that’s exactly what happened: with respect for the past, they release a collection of vocal pieces, adapted with that thought. The pieces are sung by Maria Giaquinto in a truly captivating way. In addition to their own work, the quintet enthusiastically plays songs by, among others, Pino de Vittorio, the Sicilian singer Rosa Balistrerie and singer Lucilla Galeazzi. This adventurous music is full of musical delights, such as the use of the mandola (kind of a large mandolin), sax, guitar and double bass solo in the only instrumental piece Annobon, light electronics in the intro of the lullaby Lu Furastiero. Sometimes the music sounds heavy, such as in T’adore e te Rengrázia (with fuzzy guitar solo) and the bold A Devozione, with a tarantella rhythm, refined with time changes. And the wonderful driven Soj Ciardine. A song with an infinitely beautiful melody, masterfully arranged. It may be a summary, but on this album every song has something unique, something characteristic. That is not only wonderful to listen to, but also very well done!
