Het nieuwe album Ricercare van het Ssens Trio biedt een fraai trio-exposé van vier Noorse componisten.

Het Ssens Trio werd opgericht in 2014 door violist Sølve Sigerland, altvioliste Henninge Landaas en celliste . Drie doorgewinterde musici die met veel podiumervaring de kamermuziek omarmen en concerten gaven in Europa, de VS en Azië. Ze namen albums op met werken van Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven. Op Ricercare speelt het Ssens Trio werken van vier componisten uit Noorwegen die in de tweede helft van de 20ste eeuw strijktrio’s componeerden: Johan Kvandal, Finn Mortensen, Edvard Fliflet Bræin en Bertil Palmar Johnasen. Werken met fraai opklimmende chromatiek zoals in Kvandal’s String Trio met een opmerkelijk onstuimig slot in het Allegro – IIIde deel. Een prachtig IIde deel Adagio – Allegretto van Mortensen’s Trio Op. 3, waar de thematiek eigenzinnig zijn eigen weg gaat. De één-delige compositie Trio Op.55 van Bræin heeft eigenschappen van het werk van Sjostakovitsj met een bijtend en bijna aanvallend en energiek timbre. Terwijl Ricercare for Strings van Johansen een meer verhalend werk is, zeker het IIde deel waar de thematische lijnen elkaar contemplatief aanvullen. Maar wat het meest opvalt is dat het Ssens Trio al deze werken speelt met een wervelend gemak en doorleefde souplesse. Met een trefzekerheid raakt het trio de emotionele diepte, klinkt het uitgebalanceerd en vullen ze elkaar feilloos aan, waarbij het soms lijkt alsof je naar meer dan drie strijkers luistert. Door zo’n uitvoering krijgt dit onbekend repertoire een verrassende vanzelfsprekendheid die de muziek niet alleen ongelooflijk boeiend maakt maar ook meeslepend en indrukwekkend!

The new album Ricercare by the Ssens Trio offers a beautiful Norwegians string trio collection.

The Ssens Trio was founded in 2014 by violinist Sølve Sigerland, violist Henninge Landaas and cellist Ellen Margrete. Three skilled musicians who, with a lot of stage experience, embrace chamber music and gave concerts in Europe, the US and Asia. They recorded albums of works by Brahms, Mozart, Beethoven. At Ricercare, the Ssens Trio plays works by four composers from Norway who composed string trios in the second half of the 20th century: Johan Kvandal, Finn Mortensen, Edvard Fliflet Bræin and Bertil Palmar Johnasen. Compositions with beautiful ascending chromaticism as in Kvandal’s String Trio, with a remarkably impetuous conclusion in the Allegro – IIIth movement. A beautiful IInd movement Adagio – Allegretto by Mortensen Trio Op. 3, where the theme idiosyncratically goes its own way. The one-part composition Trio Op.55 by Bræin has characteristics of the work of  Sjostakovich with a biting and almost attacking and energetic timbre. While Johansen’s Ricercare for Strings is a kind of narrative work, especially the second part where the thematic lines complement each other thoughtful. But the most striking is that the Ssens Trio plays all these works with a dazzling ease and lived suppleness. The trio hits the emotional depth with precision, sounds balanced and complements each other flawlessly, sometimes making it seem as if you’re listening to more than three string instruments. Such a performance gives this unknown repertoire a surprising naturalness that not only makes the music incredibly fascinating, but also lively and impressive!
