Het nieuwe album Songs & Poems van componist Sergey Akhunov uit Kiev bevat bijzondere kamermuziek, zowel vocaal als instrumentaal.

Sergey Akhunov is binnen de muziek een individualist. Hij wordt geboren in Kiev en maakt, na zijn Conservatoriumstudie in de Oekraïense hoofdstad, aanvankelijk carrière als hoboïst en experimenteerde met pop, rock en elektronische muziek. In 2005 besluit hij componist te worden van (film)muziek voor kleine bezetting (kamermuziek) en orkest. Hij gaat o.a. muziek componeren voor het ensemble La Voce Strumentale, waarvan het nieuwe album Songs & Poems nu is verschenen. Sergey Akhunov componeerde muziek op de poëzie van de eigenzinnige Amerikaanse dichter Edward Estlin Cummings (1894-1962) en op een selectie uit de dichtbundel Chinese Travalogue uit 1986 van de Russische dichter Olga Sedakova. Overwegend vocale muziek wordt begeleid door een klein orkest van acht strijkers, theorbe/luit, piano en percussie. Het resultaat is van een ongekende schoonheid. Meditatieve muziek, met heldere vocalen van dirigent en countertenor Dimitry Sinkovsky, naast sopraan Julia Lezhneva en alt Olesya Petrova. Elke compositie heeft een unieke bezetting waar strijkers, piano en percussie fraai worden georkestreerd. Waar diverse klankkleuren, met zowel consonante als dissonante harmonieën, niet worden geschuwd in onverwachte muzikale doorwerkingen en variaties. Zelden kom je muziek tegen waar het conventionele zo verrassend wordt gelardeerd met dynamische ontwikkelingen. Fraai daarbij zijn de subtiele Chinese kleuren in de Chinese Travalogue, door het gebruik van percussie, pentatoniek en theorbe / luit die verwijzen naar de koto (Chinees tokkelinstrument). Songs & Poems sluit af met Cherubic Chant, inderdaad een strelende instrumentale compositie die de tijd even laat stilstaan…. Sergey Akhunov is een veelzijdig componist waar we hopelijk nog veel van zullen horen!

The new album Songs & Poems by composer Sergey Akhunov from Kiev contains special chamber music, both vocal and instrumental.

Sergey Akhunov is an individualist within music. Born in Kiev, he initially made a career as an oboist and experimented with pop, rock and electronic music after his Conservatory studies in the Ukrainian capital. In 2005 he decided to become a composer of (film) music for small ensembles (chamber music) and orchestra. He composed music for the ensemble La Voce Strumentale, whose new album Songs & Poems has now been released. Sergey Akhunov composed music to the poetry of the idiosyncratic American poet Edward Estlin Cummings (1894-1962) and to a selection from the 1986 poetry collection Chinese Travalogue by the Russian poet Olga Sedakova. Predominantly vocal music is accompanied by a small orchestra of eight strings, theorbo/lute, piano and percussion. The result is of unparalleled beauty. Meditative music, with clear vocals by conductor and countertenor Dimitry Sinkovsky, alongside soprano Julia Lezhneva and alto Olesya Petrova. Each composition has a unique line-up in which strings, piano and percussion are beautifully orchestrated. Where diverse timbres where both consonant and dissonant harmonies are not shunned in unexpected musical effects. Rarely do you come across music where the conventional is so surprisingly interspersed with dynamic developments. The subtle Chinese colors in the Chinese Travalogue are also amazing. Thanks to the use of percussion, pentatonics and theorbo / lute that refer to the Chinese koto (plucked string instrument). Songs & Poems closes with Cherubic Chant. Indeed a caressing instrumental composition that makes time stand still for a while…. Sergey Akhunov is a versatile composer from whom we hope we will hear a lot more!
